Not sure if i posted in this thread, but i posted pics of my truck and the new short block I received under warranty at 52,000. I now have almost 59,000 on truck thats 7,000 on the new short block and truck is running great and quiet as far as knock goes. I imagine the cams will wear and last for as long as the block does since they have 52,000 more miles on them, not for sure how that will turn out. If you have this issue you should notice the knock as the truck starts to warm up between temps from cold start. I think thats what the affect from a oblong cylinder is as the expansion from the temp change allows and the small window creates the piston dance to allow the skirt to rub so slightly creating the "knock" . My old block was running strong, so I think most are not as serious as some who get codes and misfires. I never got a code just the annoying slight noise.

Default 2012 5.0 engine DEATH

My truck started the dreaded knock at about 80,000. Dealer told me (at a regular oil change) it would eventually fail. Now at 90,000 it has officially died and I need an entire long block replacement. I had an 03 5.4 F150. It ran great. I loved my 5.0 more. More power. Quieter, better MPG. But I cant believe my motor is finished at 90,000 miles. Always changed the oil with synthetic and was a **** about service and maintaining my vehicle. There is something seriously wrong with the block on the 5.0. After I find $7,500 I will let you guys know how its running with the new engine....

Wouldn't this be covered under an extended warranty? I guess that's provided you had one.

I have 150k miles on my 2011 FX4 and the extended warranty runs out at 164k miles, I am taking into the dealership over the Christmas break to get the knocking noise looked at. I know they will try to tell me some BS, but with it still being under warranty they have no choice but to repair it.

You're under warranty still, don't worry. They'll fix that for sure. Totally different problem than the tapping/knocking noises in this thread. That was fixed a few years before your '17.

Still, that sucks. Brand new truck...

It is much louder in the wheel well. I took it to the dealer for 2 other unrelated services/repairs in between and was treated great, but at 38,302 I took it back to the dealer for the knock. The service advisor stated to me that they heard the knock and compared it to other trucks on the lot and said that they hear it on those, but not nearly as loud. Was then told that the vehicle has too low of miles to tear it down and didn't want to risk taking it apart and putting it back together yet. They also stated that they have never had to rebuild or replace the new 5.0 motors in any vehicle line at their dealership and was told since I have the ESP out to 100k miles that I should drive it for a while longer. Well, I am at 41,058 and it seems more pronounced and I don't understand how this is normal or acceptable, especially on a Certified Ford. I don't want to complain, but I guess what I'm asking is do I take it back to the same dealer? Or get a second opinion. And is this actually normal? I can't believe it would be. I love this truck, but its something that bothers me everytime I hear it.

I have posted videos at the bottom of page 3 of this thread.

Thanks for reading.
It's been a long time since I've been on this thread. This problem you have here, that's a defective number 4 cylinder (out of round.) Ford replaced my short block under warranty. Here's the deal.... If you have noises on start up that go away after the engine warms up, you're probably ok. If you have the dreaded knock after warm up that is loudest on the passenger side, it's probably a bad 5.0 block. I had the exact problem you described at 56k. I'm now At 98k with the new block. No issues, no more knock. Now if I waa out of warranty, I'd probably sale the truck.

It looks to me that I only hear the clicking sound when you accelerate and load the engine and it seems like you have it in drive, not really at idle. I wonder if it is in the drive train like the torque converter or something to do with the output/transfer of power. Does it do this at idle not being in gear ? (park) as it seems to be present as you have it in gear moving it. That does not sound like the knock I had from the bottom end When I had my short block replaced, but it could very well be a problem with it. take it in for sure and let us know what they find. I noticed in the first video when you backed up it did not seem to do it. May be a moving part rubbing inside, but definitely a problem to get fixed.

yeah they replaced the short block do to bent rods and few other things, but now im frustrated cause it sounds like its 10 years old. Hurd a loud crack sound the other day on start up now im wondering why they did replace the timing chains.. the same crack sound occurred and engine almost died then thats when I took it in and they replaced the short block. It also feels like I have to give more gas to get up and go I also noticed I lost 1.5 mpg since the rebuild any thought???
