Default 4X4 trouble

Has anyone else had a similar issue?.....
When I try to switch from 2wd to 4 hi it try's to go to 4 lo and gives a check 4x4 message and a wrench light in the display after shifting to neutral it locks in 4 lo and after moving the switch to 4lo and back to 4 hi it seems to go into 4 hi. After I return to 2wd the wrench goes away.
2011 f150 xlt 4x4 5.0 crew cab 99k miles.

Not sure where to start. I would think it's got something to do with the electronics or the switch??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ford Tech here. Most of the time it's the shift motor on the transfer case. Should get it checked out. It's an expensive part for a guess

Do you think it could be the connecter acting up from dirt and water getting in it? Where I hunt has been under water and mud for most of summer

Probably not... It's a water proof connector because it's outside the truck.

Thank you for suggesting this I ran some tests and bit the bullet and bought the shift motor($270) so not to bad. Everything is back to normal. I took the old one apart and I'm assuming the electric motor faulted because everything else looked great no water intrusion.

Most of the time it is the position switch on the contact plate that's goes. So the truck does not know if it's in 4x2 4x4 or low
