4x4 Problem - Slow Turn
For the second time in the last couple of months, my truck has a major problem when in 4x4 High and turning at a very low speed. Both times this issue occurred in a parking lot after driving in 4x4 for roughly 30 minutes. I get to a parking lot, attempt to make a sharp turn at less than 5mph and my truck shutters and clunks. It will barely turn and it its clunking the whole time. The tires turn maybe an 1/8 turn and clunk, almost like hitting the brakes every other second. The truck just doesn't want to go anywhere. Has anyone had this happen? I have a 2010 SuperCrew with the 5.4 V8. I will be taking it in to the dealer for investigation. The truck only has 42,000 miles on it. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

It's the front end binding. It's normal but not great for it. 4x4 doesn't handle sharp turning gracefully. That's the wheels hopping and binding that you're feeling.

It's really bad when on any surface where you have decent grip. 4WD is intended for use on low grip surfaces and doesn't like it when the tires can't slip a little.

When you turn your front tires travel a farther distance than your rear tires. This makes them turn faster(or more revolutions) than your rear tires. When in 4WD your transfer case is locked. That means your front drive shaft and rear drive shaft are Turning at the same speed. Which means your tires are as well. Both front and rear. You should not have your truck in 4WD in a parking lot unless it is COVERED in snow. Or ice. Also never turn your steering wheel more than one half turn either. Unless it is necessary to turn it more. I know it's hard to park a truck without turning the wheel all the way, but try not to turn the wheel more than half way and you should be ok. If its not slippery DON'T use your 4WD. Things will bind up. And it will happen very quickly.

yeahhhh dont be driving like that. I had a friend try to do that in my truck in 4x4 on dry road and I kicked his *** out of the drivers seat. Only for mud, snow and ice pretty much!

Thanks everyone. Its my first 4x4 and I did not know this important piece of information. I will make sure I switch back to 2 wheel once I am off the road and into a parking lot. We had white out conditions blow in quickly and people were flying off the highway about every mile. I didn't think to turn off 4x4 once we made it to our destination. I am glad to know this now.
