Not wired up yet, just had time to get the bolted on before the sun went down. See my previous posts for the switch panel I'll use.

Hmm. I want to put an NFAB light bar on and then some lights but deciding on PIAA, KC Slims or these. Interested in seeing their output.

You will be MUCH happier with the Daylighters than with the all-popular, yet much less effective LED lights.

Good for you!

Define less effective!?

buster096 03-13-2014 02:57 AM

LEDs less effective than halogens? LOL

bigburns12 03-13-2014 07:58 AM

How would you compare?? Lens area? Lumen per square inch?

aces25 03-13-2014 09:39 AM

Someone should tell Ford to remove the "much less effective" LED headlights as an option on the 2015.

The off road halogens aren't my thing. Much more options with LED with less power draw. Although, they looked good on Marty's truck.

I love the old daylighters. The nice thing is that if you get caught in a snowstorm they get hot enough to melt the snow and ice off of the lense.
On the flip side I use to have the old vinyl/foam covers on my daylighters and I accidentally flicked the switch on one. I have no idea how long they were on for but what a mess. Melted the lense covers and cracked both lenses from the heat.

What light bar? The tabs look to be toward the rear and most (nfab etc...) seem to be on the front. Looks nice. I am actually looking at the new PIAA LED lights, just waiting to hear some reviews.

It's the KC bar. Not cheap, but I think it's a far better bar than the nfab/smittybilt.

Less effective: not as much usable light.

LEDs do use a LOT less power to light them. BUT the Rigid lights I have, project light out for a v-e-r-y relatively short distance as compared to PIAAs, KCs or Cibies. At least 50% of the light output of the Rigids ends up lighting the tree tops and the roadway directly in front of the truck - where the headlights are doing their job. The PIAA 910s I had on my previous motorcycle projected more usable light down the road than the Rigids I have. AAMOF, if I had known before-hand, I would not have bought the 2-6" Rigid 'combos'. But I got "sold" by all the folks who were so impressed by the Rigid LEDs. Obviously most of whom have little or no experience with real off-road lights. And no, I am not going to go whole-stake redneck and put a 20/30/40" bar on top of my beautiful truck! Count me disappointed. I would actually like to sell the behind-the-grille set up I fabbed along with the lights so I can get a set of Cibie Oscar+ lights.

You are obviously confusing the term "efficient" with effective. LEDs do use less power, but are less effective than non-LED lights. Mostly due to currently-available optics.

buster096 03-16-2014 02:59 AM

Rigids optics are sub-par. Have you seen a baja designs led spot beam? They are equally as good if not better than a HID spot beam while using way less power, which is saying a lot. Rigid has merely flooded the entire offroad led market and makes everyone think they are the best and only option, which they aren't. But when it comes to more useable light I strongly disagree that a halogen beats LEDs. I guess if all you want is a 10 degree beam way ahead of you then sure halogens are nice but when I'm in the middle of the desert with no moon I want absolutly everything in front and to the sides of me lit up. I need a flood, driving, and spot beam to make that happen. And LEDs are the way to go to for that because you get more lumens in a smaller package. If I tried to get as many lumens as the LEDs with halogens I would have 30 happy faces on the front of my truck...

STingray1300 03-17-2014 12:53 AM

I appreciate your perspective. Haven't tried Baja Designs, but they HAVE to be better than Rigids and others like them. My '13 OEM HIDs are not augmented much by the LEDs. I drank the Koolaid, and am regretting it.

Having off-roaded for over 40 years now, I've had the opportunity to try and see a lot of different set ups. I know that technology is always moving forward, and I am eager to see what LEDs producers/designers have on their minds for the future. But so far, I haven't seen anything that comes close to the parabolic reflector style halogen lights.

I've had KCs and these: http://dsl.torque.net/images/OscarPlus190t.jpg
They are driving lights, not spot beams. Incredibly bright FOCUSSED-forward beam with very little lumens wasted on trees like the Rigids. The other lights I'd love to try is the LightForce lights made in OZ. Some 170s are probably my next purchase. Maybe the HID version... who knows. I'll look at the Baja Des. too, but I like the indestructible nature of the LightForce lights.

Give VisionX a try while your at it.

STingray1300 03-20-2014 03:14 AM

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to spend more time on their website. When I clicked on the light that I like, a different light comes up. Go figure. I want a single parabola style light - a much more effective use of available output wattage (with any type light source)
