Default 4 Wheel Drive Auto

I've noticed only lariat and higher packages have the 4a or 4 wheel drive auto feature. Is it possible to swap just the selector switch or is there more to it than that?

I have 14 4x4 XLT

More to it; I think the transfer case is a totally different set up and the electronics would also be different since there are sensors to detect the wheel slippage and react to turn on the all-wheel-drive and to turn it back off when necessary.

I don't use it. I want to know if I'm in 4wd or not. The 4a seems to engage late and I don't like that.
