Default 3.31 gear upgrade

When I bought my truck I didn't plan on adding larger tires, I wanted the best gas milage so i went with the 3.31 gears. Now I plan on going to a 33.1 inch (295x65 18) from my stock tire size 32.1 (275x65 18). I'm sure it'll be more sluggish but can it work with out any problems?

I was thinking about getting a 3.73 ring and pinion set for my 4wd. How costly would this be if i went this route? IE labor and parts?

You are looking at $1500+ for a 4wd gear swap. 1 inch in tire size shouldn't kill you too much and with the 6 speed transmission I'm sure you'll be fine. Try it out for a while and later on down the road if you want to drop the cash, then do it (however, with a 33" tire it would be more worth it to go to a 4.10 ratio IMO)

I'm afraid your fuel mileage is going to really take beating with the larger diameter tires with a 3.31:1 gear ratio.

Thanks for the quick response...I want to kick myself for not going with the 3.73s but I was in FL no hills or snow and the most I had to pull was my crotch rocket lol

Next f150 I get, it'll have the 4.10s and some stock 35 inch tires and it will rhyme with Raptor ;-) well so long as Israel or the US doesn't bomb the hell out of Iran...then I'll go back to true horse power and get back on a quarter horse... :-/

If it is anything like swapping gears on my Wrangler, I'd expect to pay $1000-1200 for parts and labor for both axles.

Yeah, if Iran closes the straights gas prices will go through the roof...hell it might be like back in the days of WW II when they gave out gas stickers and limited who got how much gas...hopefully I'll have my take home and won't have to worry about driving to and from work ;-)

I'm hoping the one inch in difference won't hurt me that much...I'm thinking the 295x65 18s which are shorter than the 275x70 18 duratracs would be easier on my tranie...what do y'all think?
