With the low end torque of the EB the 3.15 is just fine for pretty much anything you can throw at it.
Now for the 3.7 engine which I have, the 3.73 is preferred in order not to over-tax the engine under load. It doesn't have gobs of torque to get it moving from a stop; The 3.73 makes it feel like it does though.

if I was goin eco, I'd be ok with the 3.15's, but on a 5.4 I dont think I'd want anything less than the 3.73's. maybe 3.55's on a 4x2 reg cab, but on a crew cab, no way.
I didn't notice the OP had the 5.4, I thought the 3.15 was only available on the EB. I was thinking the 2011/12 lineup. My bad! :-)

I was in the exact same situation with my new to me 2009 XLT 5.4 with towing package and brake controller. I pondered it quite a bit but then realized that I would rather have the fuel economy and this truck because I don't tow very often.

It's nice if you are right there in the engines torque curve at 70 mph for the best interstate experience. If your near 2100 RPM at 72/74 mph its gonna pull real hard. Other wise trans will be hunting for gears often. The rest is all about gas mileage.

You'd be surprised, 3.15 is a good gearing, even in a larger ride like ours.

I don't get why people feel like they HAVE to be able to hold DOUBLE overdrive gear without the transmission shifting on a hill.....reach up an hit the "-" and lock out 6th, boom. Haul in the same fat spot in 5th gear with your 3.15, Just like the 3.73 truck does going down the road in 6th.

This coming from a 3.73 owner, formerly 3.23 owner in my Chevy 5.3. Most these trucks don't pull a trailer even 5% of their miles, why not get the best for the 95%?

There ya go. As all my Mustang buddies used to say, "Don't fear the gear!"
