36 gal. tank in 2011 Ecoboost
I had the 36 gallon tank installed last week in my new 2011 Ecoboost SCrew 4x4. It had about 650 miles on the odometer. I've driven about 170 miles since the swap.
The installation required a new set of fuel lines (the set that clips to the top of the tank). Existing filler line, sender, straps, and pump were reused. Ford says there is no reprogramming available. The DTE is all over the place. After fill up it showed about 340 miles to empty. It has gone up and and down, currently showing about 280 after showing 240 yesterday, even though I've driven a few miles since and have not added any gas to the tank. The gas gauge stayed pegged at full for about 80 miles, then dropped to 3/4, then went to 7/8, then to 5/8. This morning it showed about 7/8 after driving about a mile. I plan to run a few tanks to see if the computer settles down. I think I've read that the computer may adjust/adapt over time, but I have no idea if it's true. Not sure why the gauge is so variable. In any case, I saved the original tank and fuel lines.
It would be great if Ford came out with an option or accessory kit to change out the 2011 Eco's to the 36 gal. - the tank that will be standard in the 2012's.

I'm fascinated by the idea of this. I can't stand the short range my 26 gal tank has and wished my truck had a 36 gal tank. But just for simplicity - did you spend almost $1,000 in modifications to increase your fuel tank? I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the cost for me.

Ecoboost gives 16 city mpg and 23 highway mpg according to MotorTrend. With a 26 gallon tank that gives you 416 miles and 598 miles range respectively.
With a 36 gallon tank you would get 576 and 828 miles per tank.
If you Ecoboost guys can outlast the range of your 26 gallon gas tank, you have excellent endurance.
Y'all are talking like a bunch of long haul truckers. How many times per year do you travel over 400 miles from home? In the 2 years I have owned my truck, only 2 trips over 400 miles from home.
