Unhappy 2014 towing help!!!

Well yesterday we traded in our 05 f250 (6.0) for a 2014 f150 EcoBoost crew cab 4x4. The main purpose of this is truck is to tow our 31 foot travel trailer (actually 36 total) weighing in at about 8,000 lbs dry. The dilemma is that the car salesmen at the dealership misinformed us. we told him that the trailer weighs around 10,000 lbs full and he told us this truck could pull 13,500 easy.

The problem is when we got home I started looking over the spec sheet of the truck and realized its HAS A 3.31 GEAR RATIO?!?! Ford car salesmen these days . I am no expert but I know this is not a desired gear ratio for towing.

So my question is what would be the best course of action? demand them to install lower gears for free? (very unlikely) look for another truck on the lot with a better tow package? (but we really like this truck and got a great deal on it) or should we just give up and move on?

Also, in case we have to choose a new one, what would be the best towing package for towing this 10,000 lbs travel trailer? (just go with a max tow model?) And If we kept the current truck, what would have to be done to it to make it a max tow model?

Oh and we used to occasionally put a lifted ezgo golf cart in the bed of our f250 while towing the camper (took the tailgate off of course) would this be a bad idea or even impossible on this f150?

Thanks for reading

Take it back, take it back now! I hate to tell you that you will be waay over weight with those gears even in an ecoboost. The max tow package in the ecoboost is 11.5k pounds and it's with 3.73 gears. I think with a 3.31 you are limited to 7k pounds. If the truck is brand new, I'd roll it back to the dealer and make them make it right for you. They won't change the gearing though, I think only the after market will do that and it would void your warranty anyway. You need to get out of that truck or get a smaller trailer if you are gonna keep it. Those salesman know nothing about the cars they sell, sad but true.

I would take the truck back and demand a new one. Also its a little your fault for not looking at the spec sheet before buying. The f150's are rated at 11,300lb max tow. Payload ranges depending on what trim and how many accessories you have. My max tow eb has a max payload of 1,840 lbs.

Don't even think about throwing a golf cart in the back with the trailer hooked up. U will be over weight. If you decided to keep this truck , you would need the re-gear to 3.73's, add the trans and radiator cooler, upgrade the rear bumper and receiver hitch.

I would go back the the dealership and demand to talk to the general manager. See how he is going to fix the problem. Tell him that if nothing is done, you will give very negative feedback on the csi report ford sends you. Dealerships take those very seriously as they effect their business standing with ford.

Thanks for the input. We are taking it back today.

Do they still send a csi report even if you cancel the contract? This is the last day to cancel and we are forced to so that we are not stuck with this truck however we would like to use the report as leverage to get a better deal on a better truck.

Or does anyone have and info/help on what we could do to get the better of this situation? thanks

1st cancel your truck, that's your primary concern. Forget leveraging anything for now.
2nd once cancelled, then and only then, tell them exactly what you want (within reason, ie same deal (% wise) but on the right truck).
3rd if they won't budge, politely ask to speak to the gm
4th tell the gm exactly what you want (same as number 2)
5th if the gm doesn't budge, cut your losses and go buy the truck you want elsewhere, let the gm know this is what you'll be doing.

I've been working in a dealership for 11 years now

again thanks for the input.

we will be asking if they have a max tow or HD model. Is one better than the the other? I just did some quick research and I'm not sure if these are even the correct names. And in regards to why a 1/2 ton over a 3/4 ton, we do drive it daily so that's why we wanted better mpg and cheaper fuel over a diesel. I meant main purpose in my first post as to why we chose a truck instead of an suv or car.

oh and I got the exact numbers on our TT.

UVW= 7520...............dry
GVWR= 9390.............total
length= 36'8".............including bumper, ladder, tongue, etc.
hitch weight= 750......tongue weight

Even with the max tow option and the right gears....if you are going to tow 10,000 pounds with your 1/2 (which it will do)........please consider switching before even taking delivery to a 10 ply LT tire...I would recommend the Michelin MS2's.

How often do you tow the trailer?

My father had a 2004 Duramax and traded it on a new 2011 F150 EcoBoost, his had the 3.73 gears and all rigged for towing, He originally had a 36' trailer with 3 slides, and sold that for a lighter smaller trailer with 1 slideout. The F150 will tow it, but holy what a difference, you have to know how far between fuel stations, if you live in an area with hills, a 100L won't take long to suck up. I have 3.55, thought i had 3.73 and towing 5000 pounds I might get 400km for 100L if i drive like 90km/h (like 55mph)
