2014 FX4 front end hum
I purchased a front end leveling kit. just the small spacers that go on top of the strut. I did a few 2wd fords and a chevy 4wd. went smooth.
did passenger side first- Was going along but needed more drop clearance. had to pull the cv joint out of the center diff. I had the whole hub assm disconnected and just pulled the CV axle out.
ok reassmebled.
I went to do drivers side and not good. The CV joint would not pop out. it ended up coming apart at the boot... The joint(ball bearings and all).
I just kept going installed spacer and reassembled the ball joints etc.
I was out of time(late in the day and had to travel for work the next few days) Son needed truck.
I brought to a local shop.
They installed a new drivers side CV joint.
Son pulled out and noticed a hmmm. Brought right back to shop. They are saying the whole center diff is bad.
I dont believe it. no noise ever from it.
Any chance the CV joint is to tight.. The nut on the end or ?????
Im going to check it out this weekend.. I said hold off right not. Truck is back at the house.
Figured I would get it up on all fours and try to pin point noise.

Next time just drop the LCA and not pull the CV Shaft.
Sounds like a IWE issue.
Jack the front wheels up from the LCA, doing each side one at a time is ok.
With the wheel off the ground via a jack under the LCA, crank the truck up. With the truck running, go spin the tire. Does the CV shaft spin? If so, it's the IWE or the vacuum line going to the IWE. If not, move to the other side and repeat.
If neither of the CV shafts spin then go for a drive. Once you hear the noise turn left and right slightly while driving straight. Does the noise get louder or go away? If so, what way are you steering when it gets louder or goes away?

Ok..Update. Now I understand how the IWE's work. Truck running 2wd. Had vacum. CV do not spin. Truck off or 4wd. No vacum. Release IWE and CV spin.
So my drivers is messed up. Local shop installed a new CV..... Was always spinning CV in 2wd and 4 wd.
So then they installed a new drivers IWE. Still CV spinning.
I broughtg trk home to check out my self. IWE is good.
If I loosen the CV bolt to about 15lb vs 30lb of trq. It appears to all work fine. I can pull vacuum line and CV spins, insert vacuum line(2wd) and CV stops spinning. I can always hear the movement of the IWE. (im listening closely)
Its something to do with the CV axle. When torqued to 30ft lb. CV will always spin.
Trying not to disassemble everything.
Any other input?
Local shop is not much help . kinda blaming it all on me.
almost need a exploded view to see how it all should look.
Not sure if they left a bushing out or ????
Thanks

Shop is going to order another CV axle. I installed a new hub and still after tightened the axle nut to 25lb. it spins the cv joint. I can hold the CV joint with my hand to keep from spinning so the IWE is working as it should. some bad machining on the CV axle. Crazy.
