Default 2013 Sync 2 to 2017 Sync 3 Conversion Attempted

Hi all.

Long time lurker who posts from time to time when I do a mod or have a question. A brief overview though:

I recently purchased a 2013 FX4 with 402A equipment package. This is to replace my 2006 FX4 that I went from 6CD --> Android tablet -->AppRadio 3 and finally a Kenwood with Android Auto and Carplay for my son (I'm giving him my old truck). While I searched for a vehicle I really started to like Android Auto on the kenwood. It is simple and just works compared to past headunit solutions I had.

So missing Android Auto and finding My Ford Touch a bit sluggish I'm attempting to convert MFT --> Sync 3. I purchased the following:
  • Sync 3 APIM and screen from 2017 Escape (SW ver 2.0)
  • GPS Antenna with blue FAKRA connector

I had a few Bluetooth OBD2 adapters sitting around so I decided to give FORScan a try. Since the brackets of the F150 aren't close to the escape ones I modified them. I had to modify them so I could still use them on the MFT should I need to switch things back.

This presented a problem. The MFT screen has a step it in that the brackets fit into. The Sync 3 screen I used doesn't have this so the backets are actually spaced further apart than original. In the end I was able to get it to work but I may 3D print some brackets or make some that can be cut in sheetmetal should this all work.

Once the screen was secure I fired up FORScan. I was able to find some options that somewhat worked (see issues) and able to clear all DTCs based on information in the 2015 section and comparing as built data from other 2017 vehicles.

I have run into 2 main snags.

1. I am able to get auto climate control to work but the status doesn't change on the screen and I have no feedback to the temp setting on the dual zones (They state off). Additionally my truck has heated and cooled seats. I can add the icons to home but not the climate screen. I can change an option via FORScan that does show them on the climate screen but I get no function out of climate at all. The temp readouts for the zones are then blank. This means i have to use my physical buttons and there are none for the seats.

2. Presets on Radio and Sat radio do not work. I can set a preset but can't use them. I can direct tune the stations but If I tell Sync to tune a station it cannot do that either.

On the first issue I am at a loss. On the second I am hoping it is something on the ACM side. I'm going to look through more As Built data for 2017 and report back any findings.

Items currently working that wasn't when initially installed:
  • Navigation
  • Sync identified as "Sync" vs "Escape"
  • Day Night mode via headlight switch and display dim
  • Backup sensor detection and correct options for backup camera
  • Steering wheel controls

What are you using for APIM settings in Forscan? I had the same issue with the H/C seats and after messing with it a bit, realized that I need to change the settings, turn off the ignition, walk away for a few minutes till it fully powers down, then restart to make sure the settings apply correctly. ( I have to run my truck for Forscan at the moment, Its cold and I get battery saver messages if I don't.)

I've used APIM settings from a 16/17 flex and a 16 f150 and after some trial and error was able to get it to work.

What is your setting/value for 7D0-01-01?

Just went through the same conversion. This AsBuilt will get presets working, although I'm not sure what bits exactly did it - no heated/cooled seats on this either, so you'll need to add that back in. This is tailored to my XLT, so you will probably need to tweak it.

How much did this run you? My truck's still under warranty, and honestly, I don't have the time/energy to nerd out on this stuff like I used to; so I plan on waiting till the truck is paid off (~ 2 years) and then doing this sort of thing.

I'm not sure how much he spent, but i already had the MFT 8 inch screen in my truck and I found a screen/apim for around $800 which seems to be the going rate right now. Figure in probably another $100 for the new USB/Medial Module and wiring pigtail if you want carplay. All In, I've got less than $850 right now.

Check the 15 + for sale section for deals, thats where I found mine, you can check ebay as well, but they were up around 1K there. I purchased from member lucas8888 and the sale was flawless and super easy, If he has any available, I'd recommend him highly.

I paid $550 for the screen and APIM. I did notice this morning the GPS signal wasn't working and it was reading a GPS circuit open DTC. I'm hoping this is my cheap GPS antenna and not the module causing this.

I did order the hub for carplay support, bezel and pigtail which was all on sale for around $50 total. I haven't installed them yet since they are on the way and I want to make sure this is all working before I do.

Still considering the cost it puts it around the price of an aftermarket unit which is why I was willing to take a risk. I helped a friend install a Pioneer in his 2010 and it came in right at $1000 once we bought the needed module and dash kit.

Thanks all for posting your APIM values and the hint on letting the module completely reset. I didn't try that yesterday. I'll compare mine to that posted this afternoon and report back.

Definitely interested in this if you can get it all working. I have the same 402a package as you. Android auto is the only thing I wish my truck had. Nice job so far!

To get the Heated/cooled seats to work correctly on mine I had to change 7D0-01-01's values to XXXX-XXXX-22XX, x being whatever values you already have, the first two is for American Radio, the second is for heated cooled seats. It will probably give you a checksum error, but if you hit ok, it will generate the correct value.

Stupid question (and maybe I missed it somewhere). The few threads I've seen that talk about this usually involve custom wiring a big huge pigtail, which I don't have the time for. Is this now something that can be purchased? Or is custom work still required by the 'end user' (you, in this case)?
