My 2011 w/LSD does not make banging noises like the OP describes. 2nd gear only doesn't help me. But I might look for a front drive line/front axle issue anyway.

My truck has exhibited this symptom this year. 96K miles. You won't convince me this is normal. My truck is in the shop a third time in a row for this. Each time they replace different parts. Thank God it's warranty work. I've experienced this bang in 4H and 4A. This bang can only be two things; broken gears or slipping clutches. Only the transfer case has a clutch and I don't have broken gears. This third time in they are finally going to look at the transfer case. I'm expecting a new transfer case. Tomorrow or the next day I'll have an answer.

Any answers, on your issue? My truck an 11 F-150 has been doing this for years I've had it looked at three times with zero answers so far. I'm debating upgrading or at least ditching this truck because my warrenty just expired and I don't want to risk this being something major.

The dealer said it was the LF IWE. They had previously replaced both IWEs, the LF hub and vacuum lines. I drove away and within a mile it did it again. I turned around and went right back to the dealership. They figure it was a defective IWE. They replaced the LF IWE. It has not done this again...so far.
I can only say what they told me. I listen with a big huh? on my face. I just don't have great faith in their ability to diagnose problems. A lot of these mechanics as young and inexperienced. They consult yes/no flow charts to come up with possible answers.
Here's is how I tested for this. I found a straight road that was smooth and a slight incline. I want a constant load on the drive train. I drive up this with cruise control on 25-35 mph. I engage/disengage 4A and 4H. I got a single BANG! Not multiple bangs. It seemed like 4x did engage but I quickly disengaged it. Not knowing what it was I didn't want to do more damage. In hindsight I wish I would just tore the hell out things. Something totally broke is easier to fix. Like I did though, it hasn't done it again and I keep testing for it.
Oh, I always did this going straight. The dealer would say you can't use 4x on dry pavement. Yes you can. Going straight is not the problem. Making turns is. The dealer carrys this BS causes my lack of confidence in them.

2012 Raptor - loud bang in 4Hi under load / speed
hey - I am facing the same issue with my 2012 Raptor - this LF IWE, is it the IWE switch on the firewall. Thanks for the help in advance.
I was in the desert when it happened and it scared the crap out of me.
