I have a 2013 Lariat Supercrew 4WD with the EB, and the past couple of months, my truck has started making a strange noise at lower speeds (0-30). The best way I can describe it is the same as wheel bearing noise - but its not constant.. I believe its coming from the right side of the truck, and I'm inclined to say its coming more from the rear.

I thought I had narrowed it down to happening when the vehicle was cold and the outside temperatures were cold -- but as I discovered today, thats not necessarily the case.. The truck had been warmed up, I was driving around, stopped in to a store for 5 minutes, and then when I left, the noise happened about a mile down the road.

I've had the noise show up on both acceleration and deceleration - and braking does not seem to change it. Its most noticable in 2WD - but I cant really tell if its there in 4WD due to the normal noises one hears when in 4WD.

The biggest problem is the fact that the truck is under warranty, and I cannot readily reproduce it for the dealer.. Was wondering if there was anything I should check or look for.. I've read a lot of posts about the IWE system -- but I'm not even sure if Ford still uses it on the 2013 model -- or if it has caused many problems in trucks made after 2008 or so.


I know if the dealer can't reproduce it, I'm kind of stuck. Just wondering if there is anything common that happens that would cause this type of thing

One thing to add -- when the noise DOES occur, it does so when the truck is turning more to the left (i.e making a left turn or going around a curve that requires steering to the left)

The noise can best be described as the same as when a wheel bearing goes bad or having knobby tires (the truck does not have knobby tires --Michelin LTX M/S2)

I have a 13' with about 45k on it and I am having a similar issue. Gonna take it to the dealer this week. Typically slower speed turns to the left. Almost feels like a bearing, metal on metal low level grinding. I feel like mine is coming from the front end. I will let you know if I have any luck with a solution. My concern is it does not happen all the time so the dealer will probably not feel it....

Best of luck. My dealer conveniently never hears it. That being said, I have almost always had to return for any service/ maintenance done to my truck. Brakes... Return and redo... Tire.... Return and redo.... Balance... Return and redo.... spark plugs return.... Return and redo... Had my friend( certified mechanic) check the new plugs they installed for a ridiculous fee, and 1/3 were gaped wrong or torqued wrong. I will probably switch brands because of the service. Love the truck, disappointed in the service. After the new smell wears off, the service becomes as important as the product. IMO. It's ridiculous....

I think the noise is caused by IWE (Integrated Wheel End) 4X4 auto hub lock actuator. When in 2 wheel drive the vacuum suppose to disengage the hub. When there is a vacuum leak the hub will not disengage completely and will course rubbing noise at low speeds especially slightly turning steering wheel.

Mine was a bearing and hub. Dealer replaced under warranty $0. Which is weird because I am at 46k and bought the 100k warranty...but that has a $50 deductible so I expected to pay $50 bucks and they insisted it was $0... Who am I to argue. :-). Would have been about $550. They did screw something up because on the way home I got a worse grinding noise in the same front right area that went away totally as soon as I switched to 4 wheel drive automatic and left it there. If I switched back to 2 wheel drive the grinding noise came back. Back to the dealership.

I listened to your video. I have a 2012 Lariat 4x4 with exactly the same behavior especially during winter. Did it all last year on and off - 2 dealers said they could not reproduce. It has been doing it again this winter. Drove me nuts this morning. I can feel the vibration through the pedals and the steering wheel. I only notice it at low speeds and primarily with left turn or even left bend. Also slowing for stop. I still have warranty but haven't had it into the dealer this year. It is frustrating to say the least. It is like a tire rubbing, but it's not a tire. My truck is all stock with Michelin tires.
