2013 FX4 remote start distance
#31
I would agree with the complaint. The distance is poor and the button pressing is not very reliable. This is precisely why I went aftermarket and installed a Viper remote start along with Smartphone Smart Start module without losing the convenience features of the factory system.
In my install I only really have to connect power and ground in the vehicle for the system to work. You have to sacrifice a key though but now you don't carry around a big fat keyfob, you buy a key for 7.00 shipped and use it.
If anyone is interested I have a previous thread one it but can't reference it right now.

I guess I am in the same boat. Distance is very poor. I would say 35 - 40 feet max. But what I don't like is I cant tell if the truck started without looking out at the tail lights or looking for exhaust. It would be nice to know your truck is running without looking at it. This is not only due to the lack of remote smarts, but also because I have an EcoBoost and I can't hear the damn thing starting or running.
My next door neighbour has a 2012 Ram Hemi. I can hear that every time he starts it. That's the only thing I miss about the V8. Loved that throaty sound. Anyway, I digress. So Lets go back on topic.
Basic remote pretty well sucks.....

I have a 2013 fx4 and in time the remote started to not work so I switched to the spare. But again after time the spare started to not work, both with remote start and locking/unlocking doors. I could also notice that the buttons seems like they were softer and has less resistance. So instead of changing the batteries completely I just removed them and then reinstalled them. Now the buttons seem to have a firm feel and they operate great. My only guess is that with time the battery can move around which results in a bad connection? Also I have started my truck from the 11th floor of an embassy suites hotel. Parked 3/4 of the way back in the parking lot. But on the flip side it won't start 100ft away in my works parking lot....

What is this 100 and 200 series? Are you saying there is different types of remote starters in our trucks...from factory?

Or I should dance on one leg with aluminum wrapped around my head with a coat hanger in one hand and my middle finger up my... No offence, I'm just kidding.
I've accepted the fact the remote starter on these trucks is crap.

Probably wont help get your truck started but should provide some decent entertainment for the rest of us.

My truck did not come equipped with a remote start from the factory. I purchased the ford 200 series remote start myself and had the dealer install it. The differences are longer range, some type of added security feature and it's a 2 way instead of a 1 way remote. My starter button is on a separate fob, not right on the key. The fob on the 200 series also beeps and flashes to let you know if your vehicle starts or not.

I had couples of false start also in the last weeks... Some might be related to key remote button but it seems this remote start is really really sensitive to temperature too.
Most of my remote start below -15C has fail, unless block heater was plugin.
Otherwise, most of my remote start upper -15C, no block heater, goes fine.
I even had one take really strange... it was really cold that day... maybe -27C in the morning. It started fine at home (block heater pluged) and drove 50km of highway to work (battery had time to charge fine).
Then when leaving work 8h later it was maybe -20C, I tried to start twice walking in the parking lot at maybe 100-50ft to no avail... Then when getting into the truck and inserting key, I saw the BATTERY logo in-dash... Cranked anyway 1sec after and truck started fine.
Surprising enough, it was almost brand new, only 5000km... can't be a dead battery already?
Anybody had this BATTERY logo when manually cranking if it didn't work with remote ?
And if anybody has noticed remote start sensitive/not working below -15C ? (5F ?)
I will also check with my dealer for the TSB, have founded this post here:

Overall, not impressed by this Ford OEM auto start... my 2008 Grand Cherokee Diesel OEM remote start in keyfob (M-B key actually) was way much better!
