Default 2013 FX4 Mystery Intercooler Grill

I purchased my 2013 Ecoboost FX4 in March of this year and initially noticed that it had an expanded metal grill in the lower opening for the intercooler. I asked the dealer when I bought the truck about it and they told me that it came off the delivery truck like that. The truck only had 6.5 miles on it when I bought it with all of the stickers so it never belonged to any one else except the dealer and the factory.

I took it in for its first service this week and the service guy asked if I had added the grill. I told him that it came like that and he said he has never seen one with an expended metal grill except for aftermarket.

I hadn't thought much about it until the service guy asked and now it seems really weird to me. I have looked at a lot of other Ecoboosts as well an none of them have the grill. The bolts holding the grill are painted which is coming off so I m not sure what to think.

Anybody else have a grill in the same location that came with it new?

I've never seen that before. Seems like a patchy job. I would make a call to the dealer, that is sketchy.

That one is home made.

The 2014s come with a insert that goes there, not really a grill. I put the 2014 insert on my truck.

I called the dealer and they have no idea. I bought the truck at a high volume dealer in Boise, ID. I live in Albany Oregon and take it to our local dealer for service. I may just remove it since the paint flaking off does looks sketchy.

Now it is really bugging me. I texted the sales person I bought the truck from with the picture of the grill. Doubt I will here back but thought I would try.

At this point I still have no idea how it got there but it was there when I bought it.

Sure looks DIY to me. I find it hard to believe that's factory.

I agree that it doesn't look OEM at all. My only assumption at this point is the dealer put it on there. I have no idea why they would put it on a brand new truck and I can't get a hold of anybody that knows anything about it. The dealer is Lithia in Boise, Idaho.

I guess I am failing to see what the major concern is. It is an easily removable piece that doesn't affect anything. It is not like your wheels were scraped up.
