Default 2013 F150 IWE replaced

Just had the IWE replaced on both sides last week. They had been noisy and going in and out of 4x4. The dealer took look at them and the passenger side IWE was broke in half. They changed both. Truck is 2013 and has 12000 miles, only been in 4x4 about 4 times...

Integrated Wheel End. Or lockouts as most know them.

How do those break? Are they made of plastic or just junk?

I replaced them on my 2004 after 90k miles and 7 years. Normally they just quit moving and don't engage well causing a grinding sound. This is something all mfg's deal with. As for breaking, I suppose there could be poor material issues, could be related to abuse (locking in while under power), or maybe something wasn't assembled correctly?

My truck is in the shop now for its second IWE (hub actuator). It is a 2011 FX4.. The first one happened around the 23,000 mark and this second one went at the 43,000 mile mark.. Both are the right side.. The left is holding up.

I'm assuming material failure. Never abused or improperly locked the 4wd, and it just started the grinding noise 2 weeks ago, not even 4wd weather yet...

not blaming you but having had 4wd trucks since 1972 i always lock my truck for few miles once a month. i know you are not suppose to 4wd on dry pavement but it want hurt a thing as long as you are going straight. i live in semi rural area and find a fairly straight stretch and let it eat.

Wow, I never heard of this issue with our trucks, glad I got 2wd ( We own a Subaru when we need AWD) anyway, I wish we still had the option to check a manual shift lever & manual hubs on an XLT or FX4.
