A little background to help keep you informed. I own and operate a truck accessory store. I spend the better part of my life installing this stuff.
I don't know the actual color of the 2012 and newer F150 CHMSL wire because Ford changed the color and my tech sheets haven't been updated. I just know where it is and test it to make sure it's the correct wire.
Ford, Chevy, and Dodge all three manufacture their trucks with a CHMSL wire on the vehicle that is there for the specific reason of being used for a camper shell with a brake light on it. Some just make it easier to find and access than others do. The newer Ford and GMs have made it more difficult than it used to Be. There is no other wire or circuit that should be used for this purpose on any of these vehicles. Dodge is nice enough to put it at the rear of the truck where it should be.
