I would not say it was common but it is a known issue, in my 2000 eddie bauer expedition the same exact thing happened in the same cylinder # at approx. 165k miles. I did the weld sleeve thing and it actually worked for another 10k miles or so and then I got tired of the upkeep and sold it for parts.
