Default 2013 Nav Map Update

Received Nav Map Update letter in the mail for $199. Anyone know any work arounds to get the factory Nav unit updated without getting price gouged? Also can you haggle with them like Sirius to bring down the cost?

I received a letter too about 2013 maps. I've seen them on eBay before. You can update yours and sell the DVD's afterwards.

This is only partially true. While some of the components can be used vehicle to vehicle, the main guts that you enjoy are tied to your serial number to prevent you from giving the disc to your friend so he can update his maps.

I'm not sure there are many updates included other than the maps. I think the latest software rev is 5.1. My 2012 navigation is using 4.1 but I can't find a list of updates anywhere that would justify a reason to upgrade.

Ford should be ashamed to be charging this much for a simple software upgrade.

Let's see, I pay $195.00for my Garmin with FREE lifetime map upgrades that you can easily download.

I pay $50,000.00 for my Ford pickup and they want to charge me more than my Garmin cost for their map upgrade.....

What's wrong with this picture?

A friend of mine attempted the group buy for a single DVD, however when purchasing the update they link it to your Nav unit so you can't distribute to others.

Only conclusion I can draw is to update every 3 - 4 years to make it semi reasonable. I am not willing to pay $199 every year.

Looks like they take the existing unique id number off the radio and then generate a license key off that. Then you enter the key in once you put the disc in for the update. The discs themselves are all probably the same.

Adding insult to injury after June 30th you'll have to pay for shipping too!

Just sucks because we paid a LOT of money to have these units... so you'd think they would offer free updates.

Ford doesn't charge that, the map company does and Ford passes the costs through to the customer.

You paid too much. Lol. (Jk)

I got an update on my 12 Grand Cherokee (free, btw) I've had Ford Navs (5 of em) and never seen an update.

I'd pay $200 for it if it updated a lot of good stuff.

Paying for an update isn't new, it's kinda the norm, I am surprised ford is charging for it, but again, in the last 5-6 years I've never seen an update.

When I got my 2012 new in Feb 2012 I immediately discovered street addresses that were 5 years out of date. For instance Walmart built a new store and moved to it in 2007, but the brand new 2012 map still showed the old address. New streets opened after 2007 were missing. I have no way of knowing how out of date it was, but more than 5 years.

If a brand new map is 5 years out of date, I can't really see me paying $199 WITH FREE SHPPING to, at best, update my map so it is only 5 years out of date instead of 6 years out of date. Even worse, suppose I did buy it and find out it didn't update anything? Having screwed me once, don't think I'll give them another opportunity.

I guess that's the big question is what exactly was updated. Idk if there's a way to know without buying one.
