2012 Nav Map Update

The back of the letter tells you how many POI's and such there are. There are fewer ATM's and a few other categories that decreased. Is there not a way to update the maps without the code? I can get VW updates for free online and make my own dvd. It's not legal, but it's there. I don't do it though. I have access to them from the dealership for free.

When I got my 2012 new in Feb 2012 I immediately discovered street addresses that were 5 years out of date. For instance Walmart built a new store and moved to it in 2007, but the brand new 2012 map still showed the old address. New streets opened after 2007 were missing. I have no way of knowing how out of date it was, but more than 5 years.
If a brand new map is 5 years out of date, I can't really see me paying $199 WITH FREE SHPPING to, at best, update my map so it is only 5 years out of date instead of 6 years out of date. Even worse, suppose I did buy it and find out it didn't update anything? Having screwed me once, don't think I'll give them another opportunity.

This is only partially true. While some of the components can be used vehicle to vehicle, the main guts that you enjoy are tied to your serial number to prevent you from giving the disc to your friend so he can update his maps.
I'm not sure there are many updates included other than the maps. I think the latest software rev is 5.1. My 2012 navigation is using 4.1 but I can't find a list of updates anywhere that would justify a reason to upgrade.

The 6.0X update consist of 4 DVDs . The serial is not needed for first two DVD to update the system. It's only needed to update maps and gracenote database.
The maps are provided by Navteq - the same company that Garmin uses for their portable units.
It probably would be less expensive to provide download, but end users would have to burn their own DVD, which would complicate the update process. Not everybody is that computer literate

Curious about this too. I also have 4.1.
At the auto-show last year I said something to a Ford salesman and he quickly told me that 1 update in the first year is free of charge. I'm waiting til I've owned the truck for 10 months before asking for my free update but I have a hunch he was full of it.

I thought my letter said something about the update included speed limits, I could be wrong, I will re-read it tomorrow.
I also am curious if anyone who has a lock pick has updated?

Three hours to do the update? I too would like to know how many of the roads are actually new. I went to Dallas and there a tons of roads that are not on the DVD. Does this one fix it?
Here is a clip from their website stating about the update. Does say new roads but where?

So is that saying the 2013's have speed limit data and they are adding more? Or is it saying the update adds speed limit data? Not a big deal for me, nice feature though, but quite a few people were distraught by the nav not having this feature.

I personally like the idea of having the speed limit but I don't remember it showing when I'm travelling down the road unless I hit the "i" button to look at the next/previous roads. If it put the limit on the road when I was driving on it I'd actually buy it 'cause I think it's a cool feature.
