Default 2012 F150 Platinum Head Unit Replacement

Unfortunately I learned after the fact that my '12 Platinum has an integrated stereo head unit that is controlling part of my HVAC system. This is unfortunate because the stock radio leaves a lot to be desired.

Looking to see if anybody here has successfully installed a replacement head unit and retained as many if not all factory HVAC and/or SYNC functions. It's pretty clear that Ford's position on creating a better GUI or adding any more basic functionality to the media player for Gen1 SYNC/NAV systems isn't going to happen and I'd hate to be stuck with this forever. I love everything else about my new-to-me ride except this.

I've found very little on this subject searching around. I hope that's just because I've been looking in the wrong places.

Thanks!

Well, there isn't much. Have you seen the term Maestro? Might want to search that. Also, save up some cash.

Just so you know, this is what car companies do, esp to the luxury models. It isn't a surprise, anymore.

I believe Maestro will control your hvac thru an aftermarket flat screen HU. It also monitors other vehicle functions too. If I am wrong on the Hvac part, someone correct me, but from what I've been reading it does.

You are correct. There are 2 pieces you need, i believe it is the kd150 and the RR adapter. Search Maestro F150 and you'll find it.

my 2011 Lariat has the same set up, my GPS stopped working, and i have to have the entire HU replaced. I shopped around some local shops and to replace the HU with a AM that has everything plus the Maestro would be 3-5k on average. $850 for replacement from local dealer

Very cool. Thank you all for the input. It's something I can live with for now but maybe down the road when I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket I'll take a stab at replacing the stock system.

Whenever it comes time to replace the truck I'll make sure to do my research beforehand. Live and learn.
