2011 Transfer Case fluid? whats up with XL-12??
So i went to my local ford dealer for some fluids. They gave me mercon V for my transfer case and LV for my transmission. I have read online that you should never use MERCON V in your transfer case. I called the dealer and asked them and they said the "transfer case fluid XL-12" that the manual specifies has been discontinued and is being replaced by Mercon V. I cannot find any TSBs online to support this and i already put the mercon V in my transfer case. Anyone know why it was discontinued? I can still find some XL-12 online so i was thinking to change it again but if the dealer is telling me to use Mercon V should I be ok ?? The Mercon V bottles say right on the back "not for use in transfer cases!"

I had the same problem last summer. Was told to use Mercon V.
The old XL12 was apparently equivalent viscosity to plain Mercon, which Ford doesn't license any longer, so you can't buy it at a dealer. But you can buy plain Mercon at Walmart and CT or almost all parts stores; it's just not Motorcraft branded.
Mercon V is a semi-synthetic, lower viscosity than Mercon. It's probably fine and theoretically better, given it is semi-syn.
If you live in a hot climate, maybe Mercon is better - don't know. But Mercon V is probably just fine, anyways.
I was told that Mercon V is absolutely not good in transfer cases that engage automatically. It is fine in transfer cases that you change from 2H to 4H or 4L using the instrument panel ****.

I just have the standard transfer case, not the automatic one. I just want to know why they discontinued the XL-12, did they find it was causing problems? or was it just a way to save money and not stock so many fluids?? if thats the case i will order 2 quarts of XL12 from and online distributor and change it again.......

Riffraff Diesel. Decent place to buy fluids. Including XL-12.
