Default Extended cab and kids?

Hi guys, I'm very interested in the STX extended cab, but I feel like I might regret buying one since I have 2 kids. I currently have a 2004 Dodge Ram quad cab, and it looks like the ford has about the same amount of room in the back seat as my quad cab, the difference being that my quad cab has actual doors that open individually. My quad has plenty of room, my main concern is with the hassle of how the doors open.

Any input from extended cab owners with kids?

Plenty of room but a PITA with suicide doors. The seatbelts are attached to the rear doors so if you want to let someone out you have to disconnect seatbelt, open your door then they open theirs.

I got mine because it was way too much for a screw and it was not the primary family vehicle.

I have 3 kids, 16, 12, and 12.

When I was a kid my dad had a 92 chevy cavalier 2 door. There was my mom, dad, brother and sister. If we fit fine back there for 10+ years, a supercab is more than roomy enough. Just for the hell of it I sat in the back seat of my supercab while my girlfriend drove just to see how comfortable it is. I found it roomy enough.

The suicide doors a huge pain like mentioned above. that's the only drawback. If you need to fit n a ight parking spot, you would have to let everyone out before you pull in.

My friend had the supercab and it worked quite well for his family of four until the long road trip of 2000 miles. His family fought over who got stuck sitting in the back seats. He said it was killing their backs because the seats are more upright than the screw or it may just seem that way since you do not have as much space to stretch out and thus always feel like your sitting bolt upright. Not as comfy after 8 hours of driving a day. So he now has a screwcab.

I was going to go supercab until I heard his story and also saw the huge flat space you get when you fold the back seats up.

Another friend has the supercab and it suits him just fine. It is usually just him driving it. He does carpool occasionally with 2-3 other comfortably sized adults and there have been no complaints on their one hour commute.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you need a 6.5 ft bed and how long of a wheelbase you want. For me, 5.5 was not an option and I didn't want a long wheel base so having the 6.5 was more important than extra back seat room.

i gotta agree. i've been in the back of a 2012 f250 scab, and while i'm 320lbs, and 6'0... my knees weren't comfortable at all. but again, i'm a big guy.

i got a 2010 screw, and the first thing through my mind was kids kicking the back seats. while i can sit in my truck comfortably, i think i could last back there for a few hours on end. my gf is happy when we went to edmonton, which was a hour n half before she got out. no problems.

but again, i wanted a truck that i plan on keeping for a good 15 years, my next truck should be the one that gets me almost to retirement.

as for your kids please think about this first... and above all.

ever think you or your wife would be hauling a friends kid, in a car seat? do you plan on keeping the truck all it's life, or shoot the horse down the road.

as for the dodge, my ex has a 2006 crew hemi 1500. anyways while we've had lots of fun back there, anyone who knows the back of a ram, that tcase hump sucked expecially when the seats fold up.

the scab is smaller than the hemi crew, and the screw is bigger than them. while a mega cab is longer, the seats fold up. so i felt it was handicapping itsself when i need to haul cargo in it. not to mention, the screw floor is as flat as a table.

but, since your kids are growing up, and if you can afford to be in payments twice... run for the scab. myself... i opted for a screw.

I traded my 10 scab after a year because the doors are pita with kids depending on how old they are. Mine are in car seats still and was a pain especially in parking lots having to hold both doors and buckeling them in. And as you stated above the ford scab and dodge quad 08 and below are pretty much the same size, my mom has an 08 and the backseat has no leg room. The screw doors are easier for kids tons more room , easier to put the car seats in and out.

The Scab is entirely enough cab for the following: baby making, 200 mile long trips with 4 adults, carrying your crap that doesn't need to be stolen, stealthily hide enough stereo equipment to lead to premature hearing loss.

go tell that to hunterman01.

he's 17, not that big of a guy, and says... all fun has to be in the box cause a scab isn't enough room.

i've had sex in the 06 hemi crew, it's possible, but surely not as great as a screw truck. the dodge has the driveline hump... ford doesn't.

I thought this was about putting kids in the back seat, not making kids in the back seat lol.

The 04-08 models had a smaller back seat. I forgot how much bigger the new ones are.
