Default Solo Performance 5.0 MR400 Exhaust Review

Hey all,
After purchasing my 2012 Screw 157" 5.0 in August, I finally ordered a MR400 SI/SO Stainless steel exhaust made by Solo Performance.

Since there really isn't any 5.0 reviews for this exhaust here are the basics of the system:

Fitment and Quality: This 4" stainless system is worth the $700 price tag is all I can say. The hangars were in the exact location needed and everything fit perfectly without much adjustment at all. The only adjustment regarding fitment that was needed was to swivel the rear over-the-axle section in order to place the huge 4.5" exhaust tip where you prefer it. I hate exhaust tips that hang low below the bottom of the rear quarter-panel so I positioned mine as close to the sheetmetal as I could, with a small gap to allow for slight vibrations. Solo even provided huge stainless band-clamps for each side of the muffler, and one where the mid-pipe connects to the j-pipe. This system looks bad*****!!

First Start Up: I knew this system would sound amazing from the Solo video of this exhaust, but as some have said, the video does it little justice!! My first thought when cold starting the new system was that a 60s era big-block muscle car had just started up in my garage
The sound is extremely deep, with a raw, sexy growl is the best way I can describe it. Many of the 5.0 systems out there sound very raspy and squelched, but this system sounds like a wipe-open 4" kit.

First Drive: Let me first say this system is not for the city slicker that just wants to hear his exhaust once and awhile. As the Solo site says, normal acceleration is not obnoxious whatsoever, and is accompanied by a deep, high volume rumble as you shift through the gears.

This system is made for the guy or gal I suppose, that enjoys what happens when not just cruising around, shifting under 2000 rpm. When you step on the pedal with this system, everyone around you will know what you have just done! The MR400 resonator comes to life when you let the horses run from the 5.0, for a die-hard V8 sound finatic like myself it is hard to explain the raw chaos sound that comes from the 4.5" tip at wipe-open throttle......yet, as bad***** as it sound and FEELS from the cabin, the sound doesn't shriek or release a decibel level that makes your ears bleed.

The wonder of this system, thanks to the adjustable J-Pipe, is that once cruising and off the gas, the sound mellows to a faint rumble. Make no mistake though, with this system you can hear every slight change in gas pedal pressure no matter your speed.

Drone: Little to no drone at all, ever.....This is the most unique exhaust I've seen, as it allows you to adjust the length of the J-Pipe in order to fine tune your system for your engine and sound level preference. You can literally eliminate drone in all areas of "reasonable" rpm ranges by lenghtening or shortening the J-Pipe.

All bets are off however when you slam the pedal to the floor as the straight-through design and lack of muffler simply cannot contain the exhaust velocities seen when opening up the 5.0.

If you want some attention, want people to know that you don't have a turbo-six under the hood, and want to remind yourself how cool of a truck you own, however still want something with character and composure, buy this system.

I will be posting a couple video clips to aide in those who may need help deciding on whether this system is for them: I'm thinking a cold-start, outside rev, and in-cabin drive with varying RPMs.

I was frustrated there wasn't much out there regarding this sytem before I bought it, so I hope this helps someone with their decision.

More to come...

The Solo seems to be what I am leaning toward as well. Thanks for the write-up. Would like to own it even more on a 6.2L Just don't like spending $700 on the exhaust; especially if you get tired of after a while. How about engineering a baffle that you can manipulate from inside the cabin to affect the sound - off, low, med, loud. Now that would be cool.

I went with the Mach X myself, but now I'm starting to wonder if I should have gone bigger and badder! Nice hardware, and I'd love to see some pics underneath your truck.

Im thinking about buying those resonators and doing custom duals on 45s. looking for that sound with the dual exhaust looks. I certainly love the 4 1/2 inch tip. It looks badass!

I was just on their website to order one but they don't make one for my truck. Crap! RCSB 5.0. I believe my wheelbase is around 125 and they only have 144 and 156 I think it was

Decades ago, I did the headers and dual exhaust upgrade on my vehicles - then came the family.

Does an exhaust kit just add to the cool factor or does it increase power & mileage?

thanks

I just installed this exhaust a month ago, and believe it or not, I ended up selling it and putting the stocker back on. It sounded awesome, super deep and bassy, kinda Mustang-ish too. The drone on the interstate drove me insane though. It's actually pretty quiet and tolerable at <70 mph, but once you get up to 75-80 mph, oh my gosh. I love loud cars, my old car had longtube headers and a corsa catback, but this Solo catback gave me a headache and hurt my ears after a 2 hr road trip at 75 mph. It sounds great romping on it from stoplight to stoplight, but I just could not tolerate it on the interstate.

I ended up doing a resonator delete pipe on my stock system now and I am pretty happy. I think it's a good compromise. On a scale of 1-10, stock is a 2, the SOLO iMR400s is a 8, and the resonator delete is a 3.5.

Any differences in power or mileage or just sound?

thanks

Just strictly sound. Don't do a catback expecting performance gains. You won't start seeing gains until you do headers and a tune.
