My guess is that that pad is for sound deadening. The bellhousing is a bit like a drum or, well, a bell, so any vibrations in that area are amplified.

I "strongly encouraged" Ford Customer Service and the local dealer to completely replace the sound absorbtion panel/skid plate looking thing.

They said they could clean it, no problem. I pointed out it was a fiborous material, likely porous, and I didn't want to have obvious visual evidence of a leak in my nearly new truck.

They agreed without much of fuss... And even if they don't just have them order one on your nickel. I think they are only like $80. Well worth it to not have a saturated/stained/partially cleaned panel.

So far so good. I checked it today and it appears to be dry and clean. I have about 1200 miles on the new tranny....

Fingers crossed...

That's good to hear! Hopefully it stays dry. Yea I ended up not get a new tranny. Something was loose. I had a little drip from my bell house about a week ago. I thought oh man here we go again! I wiped it off just to make sure. It was tranny fluid, but has dry and clean since I cleaned it. If it does it again its going back to the shop....

I'm planning on get a new truck next year and Ford is on the list. I plan on towing a 7600lb TT and have a good load of toys in the bed. This news is very disconcerting. I have read that the Ford 250/350 SD's 6.2L tranny have had very hard shifting between 1&2 gear. It got a while for TSB to come out and replace 3 pumps and reflash the tranny. This info does not help me to want to consider a Ford.

This particular transmission issue is pretty specific to a bad run of parts, isolated to a short build window. 4/15/2011 through 6/8/2011. Not really going to be an issue once Ford gets the thousands of trucks built during this period straightened out..

I wouldn't let that steer you away from buying a Ford. Like pfbz said its only certain build dates that had a bad batch of pumps. I don't regret buying my truck at all. I love that thing! It was worth every penny. Even with my tranny leak problems.
