I took the truck in last week. They had the TSB 11-8-4 done in 3 days. Truck is all good. But..the day I brought it back, I saw some red fluid in the bellhousing area. Thought they didn't clean up well. So I wiped it clean and 2 days later, wet again...I knew they couldn't get it right in one shot!!!

So any updates? Did you get a new tranny too? A new tranny looks like the best solution for this issue..I'm very disappointed.

No it ended up being some shield was lose. Can't remember the the name if the shield though....the weird thing was when my tranny temp had gotten to 190 or more. It would make a rattle tick sound and the problems would start. When I would give it gas it wouldn't shift. So took it back to the dealer. They tightened everything and inspected the tranny. I have about 200 miles on it since 3rd attempt . So far so good! Knock on wood..... Yea it sucks, but hopefully they can fix yours.

Add me to the list. F-150 XLT SCrew 4x4 with 5.0 built May 10. I noticed a slight leak a month ago. It seemed somewhat intermittent and I don't tow anything, so I wasn't real worried about it. I took the truck in for an oil change Friday (6,500 miles) and asked the service writer about the leak. He said he'd need his transmission guy to take a look, but he was booked up. So, I left the truck and dealt with the withdrawal symptoms over the weekend.

Service writer called a few minutes ago. They confirmed the leak and want to repair it as laid out in the TSB. They have all the parts except for some bolts he says are on back order. It'll be 2-3 weeks! He recommended that I not drive the truck for fear of running the trans fluid down and "grenading" the transmission.

Arrrrggghhhh!!!

Check which bolts are on backorder. If they are any of the driveshaft bolts, refer the service manager to the Motorcraft Service Manual.

Section 205-01-03 clearly states:
Remove and discard the four driveshaft flange bolts.
If new bolts are not available, reuse the existing bolts with threadlock.
The bolts are not intended to be reused more than a certain number of times, and since the service procedure and TSB can't know how many times the driveshaft has been pulled, they just say to replace them. But on a new truck, the old bolts are going to be perfect, especially for temporary use.

I had the same backorder issue with mine. I pointed out this section to the service manager, and they did the entire repair, but used the original driveshaft bolts. When the new bolts came in, they swapped out the old bolts for the new ones and retorqued, which is about a 10 minute job. It also gave the service department to inspect the transmission a few weeks after the original repair for any continued leaking.

If the dealer balks, call Ford customer service and open a case file. Once you get a call back, describe your dissatisfaction, and maybe even point out that in most states (might want to check IL), the threshold for being eligible for a buyback is 30 days in the shop for the same issue. Three more weeks plus the time it has already been in the shop will be cutting it pretty close for Ford.

Even if it isn't the driveshaft bolts that are on backorder, Ford customer service can sometimes get parts expedited more quickly than a local service department, sometimes pulling them from another dealer.

It's the pump to transmission case bolts that are back-ordered.

Oh well. Still might be worth calling Ford customer service. Those were on back order as well when I needed them, but Ford Customer Service was able to locate them at another dealer in another part of the country and overnight them to my dealer. Local dealers can usually only see/swap parts inventory with other local dealers.

Guys, is it possible to have residue fluids dripping after the TSB done?
When I brought it back, they put in some dye in the tranny fluid and today they just checked it and said there were no signs of dye in the fluid that was in the skid plate which means that it was just residue. Is this residue gonna keep the bellhousing area wet for a while? I thought it should be bone dry after the leaking is fixed...

In my opinion, they should have cleaned the skid plate before they reinstalled it. Five minutes at the parts cleaner basin is minor compared to a 6-8 hour repair job.

Did your truck have an insulation pad on the front of the bellhousing? I'm talking about a pad mounted vertically between the bellhousing and the engine oil pan. I know my 5.0 4WD has it, but I don't think all trucks do. That pad gets soaked with this trans leak and should be replaced, but we've seen reports that it doesn't always happen.

Default Look ma no leaks!

I HAD the insulation pad in front of the bellhousing. After the dealer preformed
the trans pump TSB it was still dripping. They determined that the pad was still soaked and dripping when it warmed up. Ford recommended that they completely remove it which they did. I'm trying to find out if the pad is for sound deadening or to stop heat transfer.
So I have about 2500 miles since the TSB with NO LEAKS.
