Default 2011 F150 Transmission Leak

Hey y'all. I'm a new guy here on this forum. However, I ain't new to Ford. I have a 2011 F150 XLT 4x4 with the 5.0, 105,xxx miles.

Last week I noticed I had a tranny leak at the bell housing. It wasn't pouring out but a steady flow. I took it to a transmission shop to get checked out, as I was expecting it to be the front main seal. He confirmed it was the seal but after seeing dark colored transmission fluid he recommended a complete remanufactured transmission to be installed. I bought the truck last year and therefore had no idea if the truck had ever had a transmission service. I assumed not since the fluid was dark. I asked the technician if the fluid was burnt smelling and he said no. So I decided for him just to replace the seal and torque converter and do a transmission service replacing the filter and adding new fluid. I have never had any problems with the transmission since I've had the truck… No slipping or hard shifts.

so I picked up the truck yesterday from the shop after paying a huge wad of money and he tells me I also have an anti-freeze leak that's very small coming from the back of the motor but he doesn't fool with that so he told me to take it somewhere else for that. I've been watching my reservoir and it hasn't lost much so if it is leaking it's a very small amount. Today I look under my truck at my transmission and I see where it has started leaking transmission fluid in the same spot as before at the bell housing. Does anybody have any clue why it would be leaking so fast after just having the seal and torque converter replaced? He told me the pump looked OK. I'm going to call him in the morning and tell him that it's leaking.

Wow....that is bad. Hope they fix it without problems. Sounds like somebody did some shoddy work. Good Luck.

I'd just take it back to the trans shop. I'm curious why did you replace the tq converter?

RyanRR, the tech told me Ford recommend replacing the tq converter when replacing seal. He seemed like an honest guy and had a good rep from local shop.

Goodness, you kind of got hustled I'm sorry to tell you man. Absolutely no reason to replace it if it isn't broke. Freaking sorry b*stards.... I'm sure they do prefer to change them out while they're fixing a front seal. Easy money for them

That's the same thing a mechanic friend of mine told me. I wish I would've known. I text the transmission guy a few minutes ago and told him I have a leak again. He said he used some red lube stuff and it might be that. Told me to watch it over next couple of weeks.

TSB 12-11-14

TSB was for 2011 F-150 trans leak from bell housing. Makes no mention of replacing torque converter.

The trans fluid is also supposedly good for 150k unless you do heavy towing. Probably not a bad idea to change in shorter intervals, but make sure Mercon LV is used.

You can check the fluid level yourself if you want to confirm what he's saying, you just have to slide under the truck from the passenger side front door to do it and you need a....19mm (somewhere in there) wrench to loosen the nut that holds the dipstick.

Yeah, I definitely think he got me. Not to mention I now mysteriously have an O2 sensor gone bad too. Has anyone seen the red lube leak out before?
