2011 F150 SYNC (Gen1) Upgrade?
Just looking around for any information regarding upgrading my SYNC (1) system to a newer version (2, or 3) without replacing the APIM or any other expensive module replacements. I have Forscan and currently see no options via that route.

You would have to do quite a bit of modding to get it done (wire harnesses and such). Luckily you can just go with about any double din and a maestro device to keep sync functions. This is ultimately cheaper and you can get a better head unit.

Just started working on this for my 2013. New wiring harness, center stack bezel and bottom sync drawer, APIM, 8" screen, and the radio module(cant remember the name), media hub, and gps module all need to be replaced.
So far I'm looking at about 1300 dollars total and having to tear the entire dash apart to replace the harness, which I just ordered tonight. A bit more involved then just a after market stereo but it keeps things as close to OEM as possible. Also the used harness I got came from a FX4 with power fold mirrors and several other fun bits so it's going to upgrade more then just the radio eventually.

As far as I know no one has finished or posted about it that I have been able to find. It's always been stated that those of us with the base radio are SOL for the 8" sync 3 upgrade because the wiring is different. To which I say poopoo. Man made it, man can change it. Just a matter of getting or making the right wiring harness.
My father once put the front end of a 87' tempo on a wreaked 89' tempo. looked like crap but it worked.
