Default 2011 F150 Snapping in 4WD

Hello all! New to the forum, and to an F150 for the most part. I just picked up a '11 EB Screw as a second vehicle and so far its been quite fun. I do have it leveled/lifted with 295/70 Trail Grapplers. My question is, the other day I put it in 4x4 to push through some snow and such, when i put the pedal down quite a bit after putting into 4wd it started snapping in the front end.

Sounds weird I know it is just hard to describe. Oddly enough it has not done it since. I took it to the dealer, and we could not get it to duplicate, so they said if they got involved more they would charge me if there was not a problem even though it is under factory warranty....thats a first for me but whatever.

Anyways, has anyone had this happen? Was it just not fully engaged? I have tried a few times now, and can not get it to happen again. It scared the **** outta me, it sounded horrible!!

Thanks for any help, and looking forward to getting to know some fellow members!

It's very repeatable on mine. Shift in 4x4 at a stoplight, then give it gas.. The harder the gas, the louder the pop.

It's your hubs not fully engaged and slipping. To prevent it I have been shifting into 4x4 when coasting to a stop. Or if I can't do that, just light throttle, and ignore the light popping.

good to know thank you! So there is no actual issue, just not engaging?

I'm trying to figure the same problem. With everyone's opinions I received on here, its most likely not fully engaging in the hubs, but possibly cv shafts(I'm personally ruling that one out). But my loud popping seemed to be from the transfer case. I'm thinking that's from the backlash sent to the T-case from the poorly engaged hubs. 9 time out of 10, I would throw in 4x4 once i was stuck in 2wd in my 2000 Z-71, never has a problem. Guess now I have to plan ahead...

Don't hammer on it until its fully engaged. Its not complicated.

my mistake, would have thought that almost a minute would have engaged it (between coasting, stopped, driving then punching it)..guess I will learn not to drive it like a chev ha.

Thanks anyways!

I think it should engage in only a few seconds of coasting.... I suspect you will hear the noise again at some point.

In straight travel mine engages within seconds, 4lo as well (except you need neutral). Was this a one time occurrence or does it always "a minute"? There are gears trying to mesh, all I'm saying to wait for it to engage first. It might take a few seconds and if you hammer on it the gears will not mesh, thus clatter. You can hear it engage...most of the time its after you move slightly.

Mine makes the same noise, and you can "feel" it right below the feet. I had attributed it to the 6" lift I put on, the front direshaft from the t-case to the front axle is a fairly steep angle? Just out of interest OP, does your truck have the Automatic T-case with the 2H, 4A, 4H, 4L settings? I am thinking the 4A t-case has slightly different dimensions, and the front shaft does not respond well to driveline angle changes?
