Default 2011 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Hello,

Yesterday, the radiator fan went to high speed and the warning panel displayed overheating plus the check engine light came, all from a cold start. The truck hadn't even run for a minute yet. I thought it was because my coolant was low, so I filled it to an acceptable level this morning. On a cold start without the a/c turned on, it immediately did the same thing. I let the truck run for another couple minutes to look for coolant leaks. Nothing. My neighbor stopped by asking why my fan was on high and I explained it to him. He guessed that it is the engine coolant temperature sensor. According to Autozone, they have one in stock, however I have no idea where it is located and am not seeing any videos for a DIY 5.0L 2011 F150 online, nor a service manual that covers this. Was hoping someone here had done this before and had photos or links to a video to show steps to replace the part.
Much appreciated!

  • Google [ 2011 f150 5.0l coolant temp sensor location removal ]
    .
  • How much coolant+H2O did you have to add? *hint: Depending upon the amount, you may have an air pocket, meaning the system needs to be burped.
    .
  • Refrain from aftermarket parts. meaning: Use Motorcraft. *It's been noted here SEVERAL times that the aftermarket does not meet the need.

Your engine doesn't have a coolant temperature sensor so it's going to be hard to replace it or to find a video or instructions on how to do it.

coreys1az... Link to burping your truck please?
note: Helps if the front of the vehicle is raised a bit.

Low coolant is the first and most obvious thing. It's being covered by another forum member. Your participation by providing more details would actually be useful (for you) instead of having to pry a little bit of information at a time out of you.

From my initial post. I thought it was because my coolant was low, so I filled it to an acceptable level this morning.
From my second post 120k+ 4x2 F150 2011 5.0L v8. [referring to refilling] From near empty.

What further information did you need? The coolant was filled between min and max. Disconnected the negative terminal on the battery so the computer would forget the state. After reconnect, fired up the truck and it immediately alerted again it was overheating. Less than 30 seconds.

Kind of ironic then that you'd loudly proclaim that he doesn't have a coolant temperature sensor without providing the useful information that he has a Cylinder Heat Temperature sensor instead, no?

Sounds like a similar fault.

$21 from Tasca

It's on the back side (firewall side) of the passenger cylinder head, near where the cylinder head mates to the block.
