I have a 2011 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. We purchased it a little over a year ago, and had no issues until the end of January this year. When we purchased it, it was second hand, with approximately 145,000km on it. As I said, there were no issues. At the end of January, the check engine light came on, and it started to shudder and misfire. Thinking it just needed routine maintenance and a full tune up being a higher mileage vehicle, that's what I had done. All the plugs replaced, fluid changes, transmission flush and tuning, and one coil. About six weeks later, another coil and plug. Six weeks later, another coil, and then again another six weeks later. Four weeks ago, I had all of those replaced again. Two of them have been replaced three times.

I did some research and found out about the issues with the engine and the misfires and shuddering. We almost were hit in traffic as we were merging to the highway a couple of times, as the engine lost all power and and had no give. The exit we take to the highway is uphill, and we lost speed and were nearly hit from behind. We pulled off the to the side and waited about 30 seconds, and it was fine again.

The check engine light is on again, and from what I can tell there has been no initial fix done to the truck by Ford Canada. After inquiring with them, they have said there is nothing they can do, because it is over the 100,000 km warranty. But it shouldn't matter as it is a defect from the manufacturer. I have already spent about $5000 in repairs, before finding out about the factory defect. I have no idea how to proceed from here.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

There are 2 smart things you can do now that you are out of warranty and it will harm not a thing. 1. drill a small hole in the outlet bottom side of your CAC to evacuate/remove the slug of condensate residing there. U can always plug it with a tiny sheet metal screw later. This will evacuate the mess inside it. 2. Install a large catch can especially on the Fresh air Side to catch the contaminants that pass thru this tube. These 2 item will remove your along side the road problems. I talked with a lady day before yesterday sitting along side the road with the same problem U have. The vapor traveling thru the PCV side is just that and will not cause this problem. The emission back thru the Fresh air side condenses and does cause the problems.

I'm going to be bringing mine into the dealership for the third time in the last ~3 months for this issue again. Previously they've reflashed the ECU and about 2 weeks ago had the TSB done to replace the left cat, CAC, and ECU reflash (again). Last night driving home from work, pulled out to pass someone on a country road. Pressed the throttle down to perhaps 50-75% and it fell flat on its face at ~100km/h. Bucking, jerking, misfiring, engine light flashing.. Couldn't even gradually roll on the throttle, only idle/coast for a couple minutes and eventually pulled over until the engine light stopped flashing and it seemed to be back to normal. I've had this truck for about 1.5 years and love it but all these problems are really making me consider something else at this point.

I recently purchased an 2011 with the 5.0 I noticed a rough idle and miss or hesitation about a week after the purchase. The rough idle is all the time and I feel a miss, hesitation or jerking when cruising in 6th light throttle around 50-55 mph and in 5th at 35-40 mph. I have had to the dealer twice they say they can't reproduce the complaint and that the truck runs normal. I say bs I hooked up a snap on solus ultra to it and I could see the misfires. Has anyone ever figured this problem out on the 5.0???

Welcome to the forum, powrdbyford; I'm the Ford Service rep here. How many miles are on your truck? I want to see what I can do to help.

Well I picked up my truck after the dealer had it for four days. They acknowledge that the truck definitely had a problem , however its still not fixed. They had a team of ford engineers as well as the tech at the dealer working on trying to resolve the problem. The first attempt was resetting the ethanol sensor because it was reading 25% ethanol when it should have only been reading 10%. That didn't work. Then they replaced the crank position sensor , reset the KAM and performed a relearn. I had already replaced the spark plugs which the dealer also double checked to be sure the gap is correct and it was. So after all that the truck runs the same so I guess its going back again. Very frustrated at this point. Seriously regretting this purchase. I bought this truck after the engine blew in my previous vehicle which I bought brand new BTW and it only had 6700 miles on it when it blew. I have had it with vehicles at this point especially since I'm a technician my self and work junk everyday.

Found this thread searching to figure out my 2011 FX4 5.0L F150 issue. Same deal, heavy shutter under load towing, up hill or hard acceleration to merge. Back off gas for a bit and shutter smooths out. My first thoughts were tranny and had it serviced because it almost seemed as tranny slip. Then when a misfire showed up on cyl 2 I changed all plugs and the cop on 2. Still have the shutter up hill etc.

I noticed there is a Ford rep here monitoring this thread. My truck didn't show this issue until 138,000 km so I am over the warranty. Is this problem everyone is having a TSB. I want to take my truck into the dealership I bought it from and would like to know if I should be pointing them to what's posted here?

Thank you for the update, powrdbyford. Do you have any updates since this last post? If this is a reoccurring or present concern, please let me know so I can escalate this up to the attention of the regional customer service manager for your area. What I'll need in order to do so is a private message with your full name, VIN, servicing dealership, and best daytime contact number, as well as any updates since this last post. I'll be on the lookout for your PM!

I'm here to help, wolfcreek. I don't think it would hurt to show them the conversations on the forum; as they're independently owned and operated, some dealers and technicians view the posts here differently than others. If you're concerned about a potential TSB on your truck, your best resource is the service manager at your local dealership; they'll be able to fill you in.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send a private message. I'm happy to do all I can to assist.
