2011+ 55-60mph 5.0 Shuddering and EcoBoost Engine Miss/Loss of Power - Possible Fixes
I've been wondering if this would strike my Ecoboost. I've been thinking that they are ALL capable of the jerking and loss of power if conditions are right. Sure enough, after 30,000 miles, it finally happened to me after an extended towing session in cold and rain. I felt it start to stumble. So, being aware of the issue, I gradually got it to clear by downshifting and accelerating/decelerating as much as it would take. It cleared up by doing that.
But I went to Ford and talked to the service writer. Got stonewalled. No CEL, no code, then no help. So apparently, you need to let the big problem happen, get a light while you are in the middle of nowhere, and then hope the code is still there when you get back. I'm disappointed with this response.
I love my Ecoboost but Ford apparently isn't about to fix the issue unless you can absolutely prove it.

My 5.0 shudders at idle. Shudders around 55 mph. Was really bad at 70 mph on a trip this weekend with my family.
Hines Park dealership in South Lyon, Michigan said there was no problem. They wont investigate as there is no CEL on.
They had someone drive it and said it's normal.
Sent me home.
Still runs terrible.
On to another dealership?
Frustrating.

Reach out to me via PM so I can look into this; I want to see how I can help. In your message, include your name, daytime phone number, VIN, and mileage. If there's a different dealership you'd prefer to go to for service, include that dealership's information as well.

Just heard back from the second, and different Ford dealership after Crystal helped. I took a ride with the service guy and he felt the vibration at idle and around 55 MPH. I felt much better that he acknowledged it. I explained that the last dealership service center said this was normal operation and didn't look into anything. He told me he would not settle for that and would find it, no matter if it was just my truck that did it and anyone else's.
My call came back today.
I was hoping that like Bob's issue, they would at least check the gaps on the plugs, anything. But it's the same story. They claim this shutter is normal, so it's basically take it or leave it. Had I known this would happen, I wouldn't have bought this truck, and now I'm stuck with it. My 2001 5.4 litre with over 200K drove smoother than this brand new truck.
And until this is resolved, I would give Chevy and Dodge another look. And maybe they would try harder to diagnose the issue instead of saying " that's just how it is ". Completely unsatisfied.

So way back when I first saw this thread I had my 2011 Eco for about 3 months. I didn't pay much attention to it and assumed any issues would have been wrinkled out by the time I experienced any problems. Here I am 38,000 miles later just out of the B2B warranty and this last week my Eco fell flat on it's face. During rainy conditions, on the highway, while trying to pass, no load. Luckily, I was not trying to pass on a 2 lane road but on a 5 lane interstate. Anyway, check engine light began to blink and then came on solid for several minutes. The entire trip back home, the light came on again but I didn't notice any particular loss of power, just crap for fuel mileage lately...Took the vehicle to Maxwell Ford in Austin, Tx and set an appointment up for Yesterday. Rep explained that I was absolutely not covered under warranty but they would run a free diagnostic and call with results. I dropped vehicle off at 7:00 AM and heard nothing all day. I called them around 5:30 knowing they would close in 1 hour and the service Rep (after placing me on hold to find out what was up with my truck) first stated (stutters) that the issue was the CAC (he had no clue what it was) and stated that it would be replaced. Then something odd happened. About 5 minutes before they closed, he called me back saying the problem was the catalytic converter and it would be replaced under warranty at no charge. When I asked him about the CAC he said that they had two options 1. Replace the CAC at my expense or 2. Replace the cat free. He also said my vehicle would be ready at 2:00pm today. I called 3 times today after 4:00pm to check status and each time I was told I would get a call back with status update. I got nothing.
1st call - was told my rep was with a customer and my work order was still open but would be called back.....nada
2nd call - 5:30pm - called again and was told by another rep that the technicians were having trouble with a stuck o2 sensor...uhhhh what? Are you kidding me? Ford can't what?
3rd call - 6:30pm (service area closing time) routed to the front desk where the helpful lady up front made an attempt to page anyone in service. Everyone including managers Gone for the day. Ok. I guess so...
Ok, so does anyone in the know have any idea why I feel like I am getting totally screwed around? Additionally, the service rep either knows nothing or thinks I have no idea what he is talking about which makes him seem like an idiot or is pissing me off because he thinks I'm an idiot.
I cannot stand being lied to. Ok, end rant.....Please voice any opinions or suggestions.

TT95, I'd inform the service writer there is a TSB for the reported problem and show him the TSB. Tell him that you have good knowledge they should be performing that TSB at no charge to you along with that cat replacement.
TT95, I think you are a lucky one. You can get your cat replaced for free without being forced into getting a reflash that kills power, and without being forced to get a replacement CAC that is less efficient. If it were me, I would cheerfully take the free cat. Then go home and drill the tiny hole in the CAC as described in the other thread on here.

You have a powertrain warranty up to 60K miles. Anything related to the engine building power and putting it to the wheels should be covered under warranty. I think a CAC should be covered under warranty.

I hate to say this, because I've been a Ford fan for decades. There's really only one way this entire mess will be resolved.
The way to really get Ford's attention and get these problems fixed is to find a good lawyer or legal team familiar with Class Action lawsuits and take Ford to court. So long as Ford can drag this out and claim to the customer that they've taken reasonable action, nothing will get done until they get MAJOR bad PR and know that they run the risk of a significant loss in the courts.
There is a TSB out on this issue with an alleged fix, yet the problem continues without real resolution, since the problem recurs. Our forum is a good way to collect names. Another is to try to get access to Ford's database of all F-150 EB owners who may have encountered the problem or put it into the media for attention and compile a large enough group.
I understand Crystal has been trying to help some of the folks and will disagree with me on the way to resolve this problem, but this problem is significant enough that more drastic action is necessary.
I wish all my brothers the best in getting their EB headaches cured. That said, the 5.0 rules!
