My 2012 5.0 has been flawless ( 20K miles ), knock on wood. I'm counting on it lasting a very long time...

mastertinner,

How did the trip to the dealer go?

My 2012 Eco with 20,000 miles just had the issue this weekend driving through some rainy conditions. Thinking back over the last year or so I suppose it has missed a time or two while accelerating, but this was the first time it truly shuddered and the CEL came on. Happened going about 65 in pouring rain with plenty of traffic surrounding so got my attention regarding safety going forward.

I have always hovered around 16 MPG (far less than I was expecting when I purchased), so I wonder if this was an early sign that my engine had some issues???

I haven't had the greatest experience with my local dealer so far, so I can't decide if I want to allow them to attempt the fix (if I can even convince them to do so) or just trade it on a 5.0 while it's still holding its value.

rod1, I haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet. They are 45min from me and work is crazy right now. So I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to get there.

Also, My experience with dealers isn't good. So far I had my truck in for a defect in the drivers seat, rear end shudder, rattle in drivers door, drivers side speaker sometimes goes out, power steering gets hung up when returning to center (which almost caused an accident the first time it happened) and a leaking rear shock.

So far all they fixed was the leaking rear shock and the drivers seat. And they lubed the drive shaft cause they said it had a bump stop, which I didn't even realize I had. Everything else the dealer said they couldn't recreate. I even let them have the truck for the better half of a week to see if they could recreate the steering problem which is my main concern. I can see the power steering going out right after warranty.

So as you can see I'm not to enthusiastic about taking my truck in.

I pray for the day that I can get rid of this truck. Unfortunately I fear that the Ecoboost will have the resale value of a Suzuki. I need to hang on to it for another year so I don't take too bad a beating on trade in. My choke and sputter has actually gotten worse. It happened again this past weekend on I80 in the rain at night. Go to pass a truck, hit the gas, starts to shake like an earthquake, no power. Almost cause am accident, drift to side of road, turn off and back on, hit the road again. The best part, no CEL or indicators of any kind came on. I have a 2012 FX4 with the CAC cover installed. It didn't really help at all. The sad part is, when I wrote a letter to Ford, their response was "sorry we couldn't meet your expectations". How much lower can my expectations be? When it's not dying in the middle of a highway, it surged and hesitates. The rotors are so warped they need to be replaced.

I posted comments on this forum several months ago after several attempts to fix my truck. I revisited this forum today and discovered a Ford Rep on this site acting concerned. If Ford was truly concerned they would fix these trucks...They are losing lots of business because I am positive all of us are not recommending this truck to anyone. I think its a slap in my face to say take another day off from work and bring the truck in so we can "look at it" because that's all Ford can do is look at it. I have better service when I purchase a pair of jeans that don't fit.

And the Ford Rep Mary Albright working on my case was extremely rude. To the point she stated go get a lawyer and guess what Mary I have and you will be the first witness called.

If Ford cannot hear the level of frustration from their customers then shame on them. Its apparent they could care less we paid several thousands of dollars for a truck they cannot fix.

The problem is, Ford isn't loosing business over this. Ecoboost is a hit in other vehicles with little to no issue. All while F-150 stays at the number one spot for sales in the US. Silverado is the only one close to over taking it, but I don't think anyone here is going to rush out to buy one of those either... So while Ford continues to cash in on this generation of F-150, they're counting the days for to the release of the next generation that will ease the demands on this powertrain combo.

I've spoken to numerous F150 EcoBoost owners about their trucks, and overall the owners of these vehicles are NOT having the problems some of us experience. (I have had the problem once myself, so I am not offering excuses to Ford.) What I am saying is that the vast majority of these trucks are running perfectly, so Ford is not likely seeing this a huge problem.

Ford does need to step up and deal with this, though. An idea would be for Ford to arrange an advanced diagnosic test for one of the trucks which is continually having this problem. With enough testing equipment hooked up to a truck which constantly experiences these problems, I think the cause could be discovered.

I do NOT think the "cause" Ford has given is really the true issue.

Well guys, I've finally come up with the answer! Traded the bastard in! But for more reason than just this never ending feeling that this truck will not make it to 100,000 miles... When I bought mine, an extended cab was more than enough space for me and my wife. It wasn't until we had our first child that I realized how much of a PITA not having a full four door is. So between that, and the fact that my commute changed recently, I pulled the trigger on a 2.0L Taurus SEL. Cut my payment, and it rides VERY nice.

I've never traded in a vehicle before, but between my Z plan and what the dealer was going to give me, I couldn't pass it up with the current 0% for 60. After looking around at how many Ecoboost 2011-2012 trucks are out there and not moving, I just didn't see it being possible to sell the thing on my own any time soon. Found 78 completed listings on eBay alone, and of all those, only 1 sold... So, it's someone elses problem now. Maybe they'll have the magic foot and it'll be great for them.
