Transmission shudder
Hi everyone,
I've had a 40 to 65mph stumbling since buying my F150 new (a 2012 leftover) earlier this year. It isn't the severe fall on your face, CAC water gulping stumbling that a number of you have experienced, but more a annoying hesitation/miss/lugging/stutter while trying to accelerate at low rpms in 6th gear (could get it to do it every single time). I was actually most worried about the CAC condensation issue from reading through this forum and living here in hot, humid, rainy Florida, so I took preemptive measures and drilled a small 1mm hold at the outlet end of the bottom of the CAC. Didn't see or feel any difference in performance (since the airflow lost, less than 0.6 scfm at 20psi boost, is relatively insignificant) and just a hint of a oil smear on the metal CAC cross support near the CAC hole after ~3000mi now (some blowout during boost).
I also picked up a Livewire TS from Unleashed Tuning and took some datalogs of the truck from 40 to 50mph. I suspected the transmission as I had never seen any misfires in any of the logs with the Livewire (had also regapped my plugs when I first got the truck). I did however, log more data with transmission specific PIDs and noticed some irregularities in the velocity curve that coincided with the stuttering and asked Torrie (from Unleashed) if he could look into it. Torrie sent back a couple of 'test' tunes to try and the hesitation/stutter was essentially eliminated (at least where I could no longer distinguish between road bumps and stuttering!). I've attached a before/after set of plots of the event. The stuttering occurs around the 24s mark on the top plot, with the rapid oscillations in the logged velocity. Not sure what Torrie changed, but it was transmission specific and the shudder is essentially gone now (bottom plot is typical and much smoother).
So, in my case, the annoying low rpm stutter in 6th gear is most certainly transmission related (as others have posted and suspect). I would hope that Ford can help find a fix in this regard, but I went with a custom tune to try and resolve this instead (yes, I understand the warranty implications). Fortunately, it has helped! Anyways, sorry for the long rant, but just sharing my experience and hope this is useful to someone. I did generate a similar post in an Unleashed thread, so apologies for cross posting.

I have a 2011 f150 5.0L and have noticed the shuddering issue getting worse over the last few thousand miles...my MPG's seem to be getting worse as well, so I am headed into dealer this week. I have 35,xxx on the truck so guess I will test the warranty. I would like to be armed with any TSBs associated but haven't been able to locater a database of TSB's for 5.0L. Can someone help me out?
Thanks.
Thanks.

And you really think Obama Motors will be any different? LNAO
I just test drove 2 Rams yesterday. Not a diesel, but the 5.7 hemi. Just as nice inside as my Ford. I'm making the switch in October once the '14s hit the dealer lots. Like you, I'm tired of being told "nothing's wrong. It's normal." The dealer reminds me of the scenes in movies where the villian will keep saying "nothing to see here. Move along please."

Wanted to add some more details to my issue....today I played around with manual mode to try and determine if issue was isolated to 6th gear....turns out it isn't...my problem is RPM based.....I verified this in several gears....also, sitting in Park, if I raise RPM to between 1600-1800, I can reproduce the shudder/stumble I have been feeling. I am thinking my issue is ignition based. (plugs, wires or coils) Still going to dealer this week but wanted to add this.

Probably not. But I don't have personal knowledge of being lied to by them. I would love Ford to come out with a fix for this problem. it seems like the issue was fixed with a tune, which I shouldn't have to buy and void my warranty. I'm not a blind follower of any brand. Ford should step up and not ignore the small amount of us that are having this issue.

As for me, so far since the CAC/tune update my truck has been better. Not perfect, but better. However, not in stock form... I removed the blocker plate and installed a SCT canned tune. I do still get inconsistant surges/missed on moderate accel, almost as if the waste gates aren't holding or deciding to reduce boost and then change their minds, but this only happens in VERY humid conditions. Most of the time it's no longer noticable.

Any way to get Torrie to comment on this? I'd be currious to find out.

I did the lemon law thingy. I settled out of court. They offered me enough to make up for the hit that I am gonna take when I trade the truck in. It wasn't perfect, but enough to shut me up until the next time.
