2011+ 55-60mph 5.0 Shuddering and EcoBoost Engine Miss/Loss of Power - Possible Fixes

New truck has to be ordered. They are now comitting to the price of new one but waffling on trade value. Want to set trade value when new truck gets here. Not sure I want to go forward with that being unknown. Back into negotations now over diminished value payment.

Hey Bruce,
I am glad you told me about this site so I could do some research. At this point I am wondering if I should even continue looking for a F150 at all. With Ford's attitude about this problem what is to say if a problem comes up in the 5.0 they will not deny the problem also. And to think the dealers claim sales are so good on the Eco they are only offering a small rebate on trucks with these engines vs. the ones with a 5.0. I guess Ford will need the money for all the buy backs and losses from the lemon law vehicles!
If and when I go back to a Ford dealer and they try to push one of these Eco's onto me and try to act surprised I will bring this post up. This many owners cannot be wrong. I don't really like supporting a foreign manufacturer but that Tundra is looking better all the time.

i have a 5.0 and mine shudders so bad i will not even drive it. this morning on the way to work it felt like my tranny was going to blow up. we have the problem to.

Not the same issue, but obviously you should visit the dealer and get it hooked up to their diagnostics computer.

I came down pretty sick last Tuesday so wasn't going into work and missed a bunch of morning driving to replicate my issues. Did make it out hunting on Saturday morning and it was 48 degrees with a 46 degree dew point and it was doing it. Almost every morning right now temp and dew point are within 1-2 degrees of each other. Next need to dial in the Torque App and graph some data as was done in the loss of power thread.

After the weather and temp fluctuations this past weekend during a torrential downpour, I had a power loss event and severe shaking while attempting to pass someone.
I'm almost convinced this problem is severe spark quenching. Especially after seeing the improvements the guys have been having reducing the gaps on the OEM plugs.
I've run into this problem a few times on other vehicles, both turbo and NA with various mods, it is nothing new nor specific to the Ecoboost. Ford is probably aware of this but until they nail down the exact source of the issue, there is no point in throwing more (expensive) parts and labour at the problem until the supply chain/engineering issue is resolved.
My problems aren't as severe as others appear to be, although I will soon be changing out my plugs, probably to an NGK dual fine element iridium type and gapping them somewhere around .034"
The eventual permanent fix for this from Ford may be a change to the plug specs, an upgrade to the ignition coils, or both. If you have some time and money to throw around, maybe someone could experiment with these changes and report back!

If Ford is indeed redesigning the IC, that will eliminate one of the causes. It will then be easier to isolate the remaining weaknesses if needed.
This also explains why 20% of the posts in the shudder data base thread are from engines other than the 3.5. Eliminate moisture and many of the shudder issues go away but you still have a fair or average ignition system that could cause the same symptoms, just not as likely to happen.
