2011 5.0 f-150 platinum pre igniting
My 2011 has 140,000 miles with no work done to engine. I noticed at 120,000 miles that it would pre ignight or clatter when under load for a few seconds. I added high octane fuel instead of the regular i had been running and it seemed to improve.now it is doing it with the higher octane. it does not do it all the time just sometimes when applying gas under load. What do you all suggest? Tune up, sensor going bad?
Thanks,Scottie

Scottie, if the truck is still running the original plugs you need to celebrate, and then change them out. Clean the throttle body, and MAF while you're under the hood. At 140K it's past time to do some maintenance items, i.e. all fluids etc. Check your owners manual for items that need attention. Hopefully that will get you back to normal.

In my personal opinion, you have carbon build up on the cylinder & piston head surfaces. The fuel that is injected wicks into the deposits, which causes a secondary ignition episode in addition to the the one that normally occurs.
Increasing octane higher than what is specified in your owners manual will mask the problem temporarily, but at the same time, exasperates the problem. You will climb up your available octane ladder until you have no more options, & the preignition will return.
Apply this product as directed/ then change oil in the next couple days, as the residue that does not end up burning off (Safe for catalytic converters), will end up collecting in your oil: https://seafoamsales.com/sea-foam-spray/

Regardless, I still stand by my recommendation (in addition to catching up w/ basic maintenance).
