Default Q for those that have had wheels painted

How did they clean off the wheel? I've been checking around and every place says beadblasting would be too severe and could damage the finish.

THey say they can paint, but I'll need to get it cleaned somewhere else first.

How did you go about it? I don't think just painting over the clear and paint already on the OEM will work, so?

If you are using regular paint sand the wheel first then use primer, paint and clear.I you are using plasti dip just clean the wheel with alcohol then paint. You could get some wheel acid and clean them real good.

I won't be doing the painting myself though.

There are a lot of different media options for media blasting. Just because they use beads 99% of the time doesn't mean they have to, you should be able to find a shop that has other medias they can use that won't be as hard on the wheels.

Default Cleaner

Clean them with a mild laqcuer thinner. Napa sells it. Scrub them 3 or 4 times and be sure that there isn't any silicone or tire dressing on them.

Typically whoever does the painting does the surface prep. Different paints require different prep.

If you are paying to have them done, I would suggest finding someone who will do the prep as well.

definitely, that's my plan. I want to just drop them off with a color pic of what I want and pick them up. I don't claim to know anything about painting except the basics.

Would the lacquer thinner take off the clear and paint? I'm sorry , don't know much about painting.

Cheap mild lacquer thinner will not damage the paint. In fact it's used by body shops as a surface prep in place of the expensive cleaners.
