2010 F150 with 5.4 - Very High Pitched Grinding in Engine
Hi All,
So My truck has been at a dealership for 3 days and they "haven't been able to diagnose it because they can't replicate it for long enough" which leads me to think they're looking at the engine and saying "hmm. Yep there's an engine there and nothing's obviously loose". It has new IWE's, Hubs, and Breaks, a new Radiator assembly (with Power STeering Cooler) and new lines, and the very same dealership just replaced spark plugs, shocks and tuned it up. It has 128,000 miles on it.
But basically it's developed a high pitched grinding noise in the font. They've said they've ruled out all the catastrophic possibilities but I doubt they've stripped the engine down and examined the internals. It's been a thing for several months - slowly getting worse. I can replicate it consistently around 25-35 mph at lowish rpm. I coast for a bit and then gently press on the gas and pretty much every time it sounds off until I let off the gas. It will immediately stop when I remove my foot from the accelerator. At higher speeds of heavier loads on the engine it won't make the noise - like if I'm going 45-50+ or pulling away from a red light.
I'm going to pick it back up today whether they've figured it out or not because I have to drive to kentucky this weekend. Wanted to ask around here to see if anyone has had a similar issue. Might stop at a dealership on the way up there to check out some newer trucks.
Thanks,
T.

Assuming this is an IWE grinding noise (hard to tell for sure from your description), have you/they checked the check valve? What you describe is the most common cause of the description that you gave. The check valve can be found not he driver's side firewall on the brake booster below the solenoid. It is blue and white. While you are at it, check all vacuum lines from there down to the IWEs.
I will check them again though they're just over a year old. The last dealership, for the transfer case flush, told me it was the IWE's but I checked the vacuum myself and they were holding strong. I can check the new ones this weekend but I would hope they checked the vacuum themselves at the dealership too. I'll ask when I go pick it up. Was looking at some videos on youtube and it could be the brakes or something. Idk I'll keep looking.
Everyone,
Dealership finally called in and said that it was a piece of the heat shielding in the engine bay that had come loose and was tinging on the frame at certain rpm levels. The right frequency was setting it off.
Drove it around and it's definitely not making the noise anymore so I'm hoping it's fixed for sure.
Thanks,
T.

Only $130 for the diagnostic. Held the truck for 3 days but didn't get charged for anything other than the base fee for the testing. My old dealership in Nashville probably would've charged me for the 3 days lol
