Default My Third Brake Light Fix

Hey guys. Well, I had my brake light replaced a few months ago due to the commonly know leakage issue. The dealer installed a new one which was the new redesigned version from Ford with the thicker gasket. Everything has been fine until the last little while when I've started to notice water behind the lens again.

So, I decided to fix it myself this time before it leaks into the cab as Ford clearly doesn't know what the hell they're doing with this light and the leaking problem.

I documented it with some photos in case this might help others. I didn't apply silicone to the actual gasket, but rather I applied a small bead around the top and sides of the lens along with beefing up the gasket with more gasket material. I believe this is the best way to seal the light as it prevents any water from getting behind the lens in the first place.

Nice job. Where did you get the gasket? I think I want to do this to mine as a preventive measure. I just don't trust these things after reading about so many issues with them.

Thanks! I just went to the local hardware store and picked up a roll of closed cell foam rubber in the weather stripping section.

My 04 had that problem too and it leaked into my cab and onto the rear seat.

Had this issue last week with my 2010 FX4. The rear head liner was soaked and was dripping to the rear seat. Turned out that my third brake light was leaking water and was pouring into my cab.

The guy at one of my local dealer parts dept said one of the better things to use is Butyl (spelling) Tape from any auto parts store. Dunno, I did as the OP and ran a bead of silicon around the top and sides. So far so good.

It amazes me that Ford did not use a rubber gasket on these lenses. I see foam gaskets as more of a draft stopper than a moisture stopper.
