The guy I work with has a 2010 with 5.4 and when he starts it the engine deffinitly makes a lifter tap or something. Every time I start my 5.0 he says I wish I got that instead. But this is his third 5.4 after his two f250's and he loves it and all his other ones made the same noise

Mine seems to like the synthetic blend castrol 5w20 the most, it seems to make the motor the quietest, and also looks the "cleanest" out of the oil I have drained out every 5k after 45k miles.

I have tried switching to mobil 1 synthetic (no diff), valvoline synthetic (no diff), castrol full syn (nothin), even tried going up to 5-30 mobil 1 (on a recommendation from an old mechanic buddy) for a few thousand miles, still did nothing noise wise for start up. Also have only used the better wix filters for every change since owning the truck

Since it only happens for a second or two at most I decided to say eff it and just run the blend like motocraft is from factory, plus it is cheaper and I hear no difference on startup.

Also when it gets below 30 deg I try to always run 93 octane and this seems to be the most significant effect due to the fuel producing more energy to help her along lol

I am going to try putting Lucas oil stabilizer in my next oil change and report back.

Was about 30 when I started mine up today and it was very quiet outside of a tick or two. Nothing like normal. Seems the different oil is helping.

Think I will try a synthetic or blend also. It's not doing it every single time. But this morning was 24 outside and I got a quick clatter. I'm sure the oil was like syrup at that temp.

Both of my last two 5.4's would clatter like this if I didn't use a Motorcraft filter. If I couldn't find a Motorcraft at the Wal-Mart I would substitute with a Fram and they would clatter every time until the filter was replaced with a Motorcraft.

It has a motorcraft filter and it still does it from time to time.
