2010 5.4 engine noise
#11
Mine started something that sounds like chain slap at about 50,000 miles when cold. I took it to the dealer, and of course, they said all was normal. Over the last 20,000 miles, I have developed a constant chain slap sound anytime you are in the 1300-1800 rpm range. It only happens when it is in gear, because you cannot replicate it when you are in park, and i know it is coming from the engine. I have 102,000 miles right now, and can live with a little noise, if that is all it is; and I did hear an 05 or 06 King Ranch the other day...wow, that thing sounded just like mine, only a lot louder!

Mine also has some knock/slap noise anytime I first start it for the first second or two when its under say 30 deg F. I have 42k on it now and also asked dealer and was told since the upper part of the motor is aluminum(and cold) you are hearing the valve-train/piston running with little to no oil for first second until oil is pumped up into the upper part of the motor, saturates everything and then all is good.
Basically they told me all Triton 3v do it, and as long as I let the motor warm up for a min or two and not just jump in and go all will be well.

I did read something about chain tensioners. But it just started doing it after the oil change. I always use the same shop and I trust them. But I did notice they used a different brand filter this time so I figured it didn't have the anti-drain back. Only other thing is maybe they put the wrong oil but the receipt says 5/20 like it calls for. So maybe I will try a motorcraft filter in place of the napa gold I just installed.

A has been that never was
From what I Have read The type of filter on these engines are very important. This is due to the complexity of the top end and phasers. Something about the filter must be specific and a cheap filter will cause problems. Same goes for the oil weight.

It's not I tick, it's a dry start clatter. I'm not sure if the filter will cure it because the napa filter has the anti-drain back. And I'm not sure why the motorcraft would be any different but at this point I will try it. And other than changing to oil myself with 5/20 I have to assume the receipt is correct and the shop did fill it with that grade.

Tick or clatter, I'm sure we are talking about the same thing. I've got 130,000+ miles now, so it must not be a big deal, since it has been doing it the whole time.

Well fordfan that makes me feel a little better but it still sounds like crap. And I just started it this morning and it didn't do it but last night it did. So whatever it is its not always there.

When my cam bearing went out, i had royal purple, and a k&n oil filter in my truck, when i got it back, my dealer told me specifically to use ONLY the motorcraft oil filter in it. And to stay away from royal purple that mobil 1 was fine as it meets fords specs for the 5.4 3v
