Default 2010 5.4 3v Rough at Low Speed

Hello everyone...

Very proud (new) owner of a 2010 Lariat with the 5.4 3v engine.

Had it little over a month... bought it with 98k miles... and I love this truck...

But I have noticed a slight issue with moderate acceleration.

Engine seems to "cough" or "sputter" unless you stand on it ... (WOT)... once the RPMs get up it comes roaring to life and smooths out.

I also notice it sometimes at highway speeds... feel a slight cough, hesitation, shudder...

I haven't done anything to the vehicle so plugs, etc. have not been checked, replaced.

I've read other threads regarding tranny programming... my local dealership said they would flash with the latest programming for $100 .... I wonder if that might solve the issues.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I'd start off with the plugs since they are due if they have never been changed. Don't let all the 5.4 spark plug posts scare you, there aren't any plug breaking issues on the '08+ trucks.

Thanks Paintballdude05. That's kinda where my mind was going. Plan to get up and do them Saturday morning while it's cool.

Mine does this occasionally, I got a check engine light with mine, camshaft position sensor. Still haven't replaced, it, dunno what I'm waiting for, its a pretty cheap part.

Could be a number of things. I'd start in this order :

Clean throttle body - free
Spark plugs - $50 online (sp509 plugs)
Transmission update - $100
Coil packs - 100-500 depending on source
FPDM - fuel pressure driver thing above the spare tire, less than $50 I think

Im facing the same issue occasionally and will be starting with the throttle body, then moving on from there in order.

It's your coil packs. Order them off of amazon for a great price. I went with factory Motorcraft plugs on mine and A/C Delco coil packs. Truck ran like new with 130k on it.

The coils are like $80+ each from the dealer. Replacing the plugs, cleaning the throttle body, and cleaning the MAF would be a good place to start. See if that clears it up. If not, then take a look at the coils next. Hook up a scanner, see if there are any codes pending and if it has Mode 6 capability, see if a cylinder is misfiring.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm putting together a basic shopping list. Question on the coil packs (since I've never bought them) ... am I looking for curved or straight?

Thanks again.

You need the straight brown ones, DG521 to be exact. You can but 8 new oem ones made by AC Delco on ebay for 105 bucks, that's the route I'm taking. Spark plugs are Sp509, $50 bucks on eBay for 8.
