I also read about disconnecting the battery for a bit to reset the system.

Probably the 4x4 shift Motor - when they get old that rubber stop inside it deteriorated and the computer gets lost giving error. In my plow truck the ceramic disc inside motor came unglued from hub caused same error .
i ended up repairing it because I couldn稚 get a new motor fast enough- been couple years and been working fine with fix.

Since mine has gone back to intermittent working no service wrench to service 🔧 I致e ordered a replacement transfer case motor. $125 Doorman shipped with 2 year warranty via Amazon.

Should be here Thursday. Hopefully I値l have time to swap it out Thursday night. I値l let you know.

Awesome maybe that will do, idk how much the motor is suppose to turn when engaged but I got my wife to turn it while I was under the truck and the slot barely moved then went back to same position

Sounds like that is a problem if it's not staying engaged.

While I am not a Ford expert and dont own a Ford 4x4, I had similar issues with my Ram 4x4. the statement you made above made me instantly think Transfer case motor. I hope this fixes your issue.

Thanks pickupmam66. Why is it your problem is fixed only after you tried every other option and the last one you can do fixes it? Lol. At least I have a completely new system from hubs, actuators, vacuum line, solenoid, switch, and transfer case motor when I replace that. So as long as the half shafts, u-joints, and transfer case hold up I should be good.
