^^^Rightfully so......The rear brake is only 20-25% stoping power. In addition, the parking brake is Cable, unllike the brake pedal which is hydraulic, therefore there is less pressure when the parking brake is engaged.

Sounds reasonable. The brake you are referring to is actually a PARKING brake, not an emergency brake. It is designed to be a static brake only, meaning that it will hold the truck stopped once it is stopped by the dynamic braking system (the brakes that stop it from moving).

Do it the correct way and it will work fine. Always apply the parking brake and let the truck settle first, then shift to Park.

All manufacturers state that you should engage the parking brake when you are to leave your vehicle.
I have a 2000 Ford expedition, and 2010 F250. I always use my parking brake since i learn to drive cars with manual transmissions.
We actually have a new rule at my work place that all company vehicles will have the parking brake engage before stepping out of it, and turn the engine off unless it needs to be on to run the PTO.
Everyone posting that their truck roll away when they walked away, would have not had any problems if they just applied the parking brake. That simple maneuver would have prevented all of it.

Is the E-brake actually a seperate set of brakes from the parking brake on the F-150?
I believe I read somewhere that there's a miniature set of drum brakes that are used for the E-brake, with the disc brakes being used for regular service braking.
If that's the case, it's not surprising at all that the parking brake isn't very strong.

I don't remember saying i parked on a steep incline. It was in a parking lot and I was surprised there was enough incline for it to move the truck. I always use my parking brake on hills but i don't on level ground. Like i said it has happened only once, so me taking it in would be useless, as it is working normally all but the one time. If it happens again i will take it in though.
The e brake comment was very helpful, next time my truck has engine problems i guess i could cure them by not starting the engine. The reason i said anything was so everyone would keep it in mind and give a second thought when they park. I wouldn't want your truck rolling away from you into something or someone. This transmission gremlin, if one time can qualify it as a gremlin, is not nearly as scary as the 70 mph change from 6th to 1st I have been reading about. I am glad i read that and people share as at least if it happens it will be in my mind and i can react faster to it.

Sorry, but go and read your manual.

Well perhaps you live in San Fransico? In ANY event you are a rare breed, not good or bad, but damn your parking brakes must wear out quite often.
You must have a lot of time on your hands if you sit down and read your manual? I learned on nothing but MTs as well in fact my other vehicle is a MT but... its kind of neccesary with the MTs. Not really apples to apples.
I mean if I'm on a "reasonable" slope in my truck I'll engage it before putting it in park, but I didn't need to read a manual to figure that out.
To each his own.

Hey matt1m: what's this '70 mph change from 6th to 1st' you mentioned? Couldn't find it, just curious.
