Hey there,
I've been reading that the 2009 oem trailer brake controller is different from the 2010 trailer brake controller. The 2009 has the gain display on the unit, and the 2010 displays the gain info on the dash display. But, I've also seen the 2010 brake controller advertised to work on the 2009 as well. Does anybody know if the 2010 brake controller works on the 2009? If it does I figured I'd rather have it read out on the dash, but really I just want the right controller.

My 09 reads on the dash and the controller, but only when paging through the messages or when you change the setting. May I ask what difference it makes? The nice thing about the controller is it is pretty much set and forget unless you're changing trailers. You aren't changing the settings on the go that much are you?

The right controller for a 2009 would be the 2009. It's close enough to the dash that I can look at it when I need to.

In addition to the gain, it does show a bar graph of the power output, which may be useful to some.

However, seeing how the TBC is part of the truck's trailer sway control and can save you in an emergency situation, I wouldn't dare try putting in one from a different model year.

depends on your month your truck is made. i believe trucks made before june 09 are the ones with the screen on the controller, after are the 09-10 style

Huh, I'll see what month the truck was made and go from there. Maybe if it's made after june, you can use either tbc model?

There's two models, one for trucks built prior to Nov 2010 and those after. Not sure what is the difference is but the pre Nov '10 is more expensive

I have a 2009 f150 Platinum supercrew and while the truck is pretty loaded it does not have the trailer brake controller. I know I can buy aftermarket controlers but I want to know if I can add the factory controller. I would think the harness would have all the necessary wiring and plugs but I don't know enough about the system to know if there is anything else missing that would prevent me from this. I need to pull some dual axle box trailers and a 32 foot camper so I need the controller. Thanks to any that can help.

Check behind the "brake controller box" where the factory brake controller should be. There is usually the plug connected into a dumby connection on the back of the plastic. If I'm not mistaken all you need is the factory brake controller and it should just be plug and play.

I've seen that referenced but I also see something about the dealer needing to update the software or enable something or it won't work. It seems I have a tow package (basic I think) because I have the hitch, five and seven connector plugs. But the more I read from posts about this the more confusing it is. One guy will say it can't be added and the next guy will say it can and works great. I'd rather have the factory box but don't want to spend on it and not have it work. Thanks for the feedback.

You can add it as long as you have the harness, and both connectors. I did it on my 2009 XLT. You will need the dealer to flash it for you. There have been various accounts of the cost.
