I've got a 2010 FX4 with the 5.4 and have zero issues. Bought it with 54,000 on it and have 119,000 on it now. Like the other post said listen for any phaser issues at idle and if there is one it should be evident because it will sound like a diesel at idle. If it's quiet then you should be good. Also switch it over to 5W-30 from the 5W-20 that ford says to use. I switched mine over several years ago at the recommendation of a friend that's a Ford mechanic. That seems to be the trick for long phaser life. Ford only use the 20 for CAFE standards so the swap to 30 wont be a problem.

Two other things to look for is cab corner rust or signs of it. It is common because people don't replace the 3rd brake light gasket and it causes a leak. Best way to see if you've had a leak is to check the rear of the headliner for any signs of water stains. The last thing is make sure the seat heaters work. The drivers side is prone to failure but easy and fairly cheap to replace if your a DIY type guy. The way to tell if they have issues is to turn them on and see if they stay on or the light goes off after a few seconds.

I was in the same boat as you when I bought mine and heard some horror stories about the 5.4 3V but I think most of them were addressed by 09-10. Mine does decent on gas mileage and I've pulled several 5-7K trailers with mine and had zero issues and I live in the mountains of NC so not exactly flat roads. The truck has been very reliable and I don't see me getting rid of it anytime soon.

Oh one more thing... Invest in good leather conditioner and keep it on those seats. I had a King Ranch Expedition and the seats look amazing but you have to keep them properly conditioned or they easy turn to looking terrible really quick.

Hopefully he used motorcraft oil and filters. Just check for the phaser noise and that will help you make your decision.
