Well, that Platinum ended up being a turd... within a minute of looking at it I knew I wasn't gonna buy it. Beat to heck. After that I went to look at a 2010 FX4, very nice truck, but they offered WAY less that what I was told before on my fiesta, then didn't seem to care much about getting me financed after I told them I own my own business... which I will take mine elsewhere

1) 6 speed tranny is not very good.. It shifts when it wants to, how it wants to and will do so differently weekly. the 2011 6R80's had revised shift solenoids and I wonder if that helped.. Driving a 4 speed in my wifes 'burban is much more enjoyable. Consider a tune to fix this.

2) A/C sucks as you read from all years. 3rd brake light WILL leak. none of this specific to this model year.

3) 5.4 makes noises at idle.. ticking and etc. Mine had a horrible knocking noise on startup and is a bad Cat. Conv.. Spark plugs are no problem. Phasers - we'll see but no sounds from them.

4) had TPMS lights, off and on wrench light and airbag light, and many SES lights for bad cat and o2 sensors. But all of that could just be "my" truck.

5) MPG's are very good in town.. Probably from the constantly shifting 6 speed.. 19 on the highway. (though my old 94 Chevy got 18-19?!.)

My suggestion.. Figure out a way to get into a '11 or '12 5.0.. You won't regret it. The 5.4 is not a very refined engine though better in a 09-10.. These early 6R80 is lacking big time in the "programming". 2011's on up should be much better. Good luck.
Very helpful and good to know. It looks like I'm gonna be spending more than I initially wanted to no matter what I do, might as well go for a little later model that I can get better financing terms on. The trans in the 2010 I drove today seemed to behave quite nicely. A programmer with some sort of option to see live readouts on important data is going to be put in anything I pick up regardless of drivetrain.

I do kinda have my eye on a tastefully lifted '11 FX4 Ecoboost that's at the dealership my father works at. My only concerns are that I don't want to wait until August when recall parts come in to fix it before they can sell it to me, and that I'm still iffy on the 3.5EB thing, especially a first year EB and even more so when I have a dead EB Flex sitting in my garage (almost no compression on cyl 4)

The 5.4 comes fast asleep from factory - A tune will wake ur engine up in a big way-
I appreciate the way my 2010 5.4 truck shifts with the 5 star perf map. - I am running 3:31s - if you end up with 3.55 s it will even be more responsive!

This ^^ I've put 60,000km on my truck and have had little to no problems.. getting ready to do plugs soon mind you, so well see what happens there..

only thing i highly recomend is a tuner.. i put one off for a long time til i finally pulled the trigger and picked one up... night and day difference.. my fuel mileage jumped to almost 23MPG if she was being babied, tightened the trans up a lot as well, and as he said it just woke up the truck up all together.. i was having thoughts on a trading up for a 5.0 but now ill stick with what i have for a little while longer.

I bought my 2010 XLT in May of 2015. It had 93K on it and now has 115K. I've added a 2.5 level and some 33x12.50's. With a custom tune from Unleashed I'm averaging 14.5mpg and have better throttle response than when it was 100% stock. My 5.4 has pulled a boat, a 35hp John Deere with front end loader and bush hog, and a 16ft trailer loaded down with telephone poles. The 5.4 gets the job done well enough for me.

Default 2009/2010 5.4 Issues?

I had a 2005 FX4 for 9 years with the 5.4 and the 4 speed. Need I say anything more...
I bought a 2010 FX4 with the 5.4 and what a difference the 6 speed made.
Now that I think about it, there doesn't seem to be much conversation when it comes to issues with those two years.

I only kept my 2010 for 8 months. I bought it used and it just had too many dents, dings, scratches and no sunroof drove me insane. The tough part, was that it ran perfect at 38,000 miles and didn't make any strange noises outside of the normal.

I'm in a 2014 FX4 5.0, but I gotta say, if I had bought a new 2010, I would most definitely still own it. I liked the power curve with that configuration, it suited my driving needs. Most of all, if that 2005--5.4 got me home every night for 9 years, I would've been 100% confident that the 2010--5.4 would've done the same thing.

The 2011 Eco will have more go but IMHO will give up some reliability compared to an 09-10 5.4. One of the known issues not mentioned yet are manifold leaks had the manifold studs replaced on mine under warranty. The other thing is replace or at least re-seal the 3rd brake light which leaks eventually. My 2010 has been great aside from those issues. The 6 speed trans is great for keeping the RPM's where you need them and the tow-haul mode is great for towing.

My 2010 is an XLT but I installed an in-dash Kenwood GPS/Stereo with the Kicker sub and amplified speakers (very good price through this site) and now wouldn't have a truck without them. I gave up drag racing pickups in my teens so losing by a couple of lengths to an Eco through the quarter mile is not that much of a concern anymore.

i have a 2010 4x4 lariat with 180,000km/ 112,000mi on it and am decently satisfied with it but ive had my share of problems. i keep everything factory, drive it like i stole it, dont wash it much, live in a salted-road climate, but keep up on fluids + maintenance.

-early on some bushings were squeaking and had them lubed twice then replaced under warranty
-back up camera and heated seat stopped working after 3years, fixed under warranty
-front bumper (painted) began rusting badly after 3 years, repainted under warranty
-truck wouldn't start after filling for 5-10attempts - replaced fuel canister purge valve assembly under warranty
-truck wouldnt start randomly for 6 hours- after investigating determined fuel pump wasnt turning on, and further investigation showed fuel pump relay fuse #27 burnt, relocated fuse according to TSB, not under warranty becuase over 5 years old
-both bumpers stupid rusty, stripped and painted with monstaliner bedliner desert sand and im happy with it
-heater door actuator began clicking- still havent replaced but should take 30-60min
-driveshaft hanger bearing completely gave out, cant drive at all. ford driveshaft has non-serviceable hanger bearing and is $1250cdn+tax, ordered dorman replacement for $830+tax and my dad is going to change soon and the replacement is servicable
-other minor things like side step rails seized
-my engine is loud with all the knocks/ticks that people describe as cam phasers etc, however theyve been making that noise for several years and i think they are "normal". also i think a pulley connected to my power steering pump is worn out because i get a nasty whirr that people confuse as the power steering pump blowing but ive been with that for a long time as well.

so ive driven it daily for over 6 years, and its been in the shop for warranty probably 10 days, left me stranded for 6 hours once, and is out of commission now for what will end up being 4-5 days mostly becuase it broke on a saturday and i want the cheaper replacmenet part ordered in.

I was told by one of the legitimate body shop guys on here that nothing has changed in Ford's paint, clear or thickness of their bumpers. From 04 to 14.
I had the charcoal grey bumper on my 2005. After 9 years and 140,000 miles, it had some chips that I immediately touched up..No big deal.

My new 2014 Oxford White bumper after 20,000 miles is riddled with chips that are bubbling with rust faster than I can keep up.
I still swear I can flex the new bumper easier than I could my 2005's.
Anyways, it seems like something is different, if I didn't touch up the chips, that bumper would have 50 bubbles of rust on it.
I should've left it alone and brought it back. It matters not really cause I stupidly rear ended a Highlander and am getting a new bumper.
I'm going to talk to my body guy about route to take to protect it. 3M..etc.

Sorry to rant the thread in different direction. I just know the 14, is not as tough as my 05's clear or paint was.

I traded my 07 FJ for an 09 F150 4X4 in 2010. I now have 156,000 miles on the truck with regular maintenance and have had the following issues.
Tire Pressure Monitors - Replace all 4 this month after 2 fronts failed
Puncture of Power Steering Cooler - $79.00 in parts
Power Steering Pump - Pulley went wonky and started shredding the belt. Suspect that it was hit by some road debris.
Seeking Shifting on Tranny - Remedied by disconnecting the battery overnight and letting the tranny learn again how I drive.
Steering wheel grip plastic disintegrating - Added leather wrap.
Replaced Spark Plugs at 100k - self service very easy
Oil Changes every 5 k with synthetic
Replaced shocks with Bilsteins just because at 75k. If I had that to do over, I would have replace rears only but overall OK.
Just replaced Tires with new Michelins, third set averaging about 75k per tire.
Drivers door seal occasionally in the winter flops down - too damn lazy to glue it in place so I just push it back in place. (Twice a year since I've owned the truck)
Replaced headlights (Ebay $150, 20 minute job) because I got tired of polishing them as they clouded over

So... I guess in summary I'm pretty happy with my truck. I too pull an 18' trailer with some crazy old british car on it as needed for which the truck rewards me with 12 mpg. Normal driving MPG ~17-18.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my crappy ol 09 F150 FX4.
