It came from the factory with a reusable gasket, no purchase necessary.

Take this video with a grain of salt, but he does make sense.

Edit: Sorry, I tried to post the video starting at 4m53s, but I guess the forum doesn't support that feature. So just go to 4min 53sec for the relevant comment.

Great info! I think I'm going to drop the pan and replace the fluid/filter. I just grabbed a case of motorcraft Mercon LV and have the filter kit on order. Wish me luck.

Yes I agree but the shop that dropped the pan liberally applied RTV all over it when they replaced it. I don't know what condition it will be in or even in one piece so I'm just playing devil's advocate and going to put a new one on. Cheap insurance.

Hmm, unless they also cut the rubber coating off before silicone, it should be ok. It's a metal gasket with the rubber coating. WTF they would use silicone boggles the mind but if it makes you feel good, it's not that expensive.

Gotta wonder if they even reused it, probably just doped the pan with silicone and kept the original.

This is why doing it yourself makes sense. I hate taking my stuff to anyone, especially a shop that I don't know someone there. Research and a plan of action avoids having to deal with this kind of crap. I like the pan and plug idea, pretty inexpensive too.

I know the shop quite well and for many years. They do good work at reasonable prices. I didn't notice the RTV until I did my next oil change and removed the transmission "diaper". I think they were just being overly cautious and don't want customers coming back for leaks. I don't have a problem with that. If when I drop the pan the gasket is in good, reusable shape I will use it but I will also have the new one ready. Would be a bad time to be stuck without a backup plan! I previously quoted wrong P/N for the gasket. Should be BL3Z-7A191-C

I replaced the fluid and filter this morning. If nothing else, I now feel a little better about the condition of the fluid.

About 7 quarts of fluid were changed in the process. It was a pretty easy job, now I wait and see how it shifts.
