Air intake question

Air intake question
Hey fellas. Got a question. I have the 4.6. I was checking the air filter a couple weeks ago and noticed there is a plastic box that comes off the side of the intake hose. Looks like it just snaps in. Can anybody with a 4.6 tell me what this is? What is its purpose? Thanks.
