Default 09+ 5.4l 3v tick / knock survey

I want to see how many people on here with a 2009 or newer 5.4l 3v have the vct tick / knock.

When did you notice it?

How many miles have you put on it since?

Have you done anything to correct it? Did it help?

I noticed mine this spring around 75k KM might have been happening for a while as i don't open the windows much in the winter.

I have 92k KM now

I went to the dealer for them to check it out and got the letter from ford saying it is normal and will not affect performance and durability.

Just trying to get a sense is what ford saying the truth or are they just hoping it blows after the warranty is up.

i have a 2010 5.4 with 68000 kms on it and its done it since ive had it which was 20000 kms ago, if there was something really bad with the vct im sure it would throw a code i do wonder why other engines dont do it just the 3v v8s, it does almost sound like something loose in there when it makes the sound and i laugh how it only does it when the engines warm and at the same rpms

2010 XLT SCrew 5.4 3V / 5.5 box.
Mine has 26k with no clicks, YET. Im sure my time is coming.

Not worried too much because one of my mods soon will be adding stage2 Comp Cams. Im either gona delete, add limiters, or replace the VCT's.

One way or another they are getting changed.

One last thing. My fuel injectors do tick loud, which is normal. Are you sure you are hearing your VCT? Newer cars have loud injectors. I mean the new 5.0's wrap the injectors in big foam things to deaden the sound. My buddy has a 2012 v6 charger and i can hear the injectors 20 feet away.

Take a long screwdriver and put the handle to the bone in front of your ear. Then touch the tip to where you think the noise is coming from on the engine. Old trick from my mechanic days. Touch it to the injectors and the front of the cam/valve cover. Make sure the noise is the VCT and not the injectors.

Just one last hope.

I was told its the fuel pump because these truck have direct port injection...and the fuel pressure is ALOT higher than previous 5.4 EFI designs. Because mine gets louder with revving the engine. Was told they all do it...dont worry about it. I am trying to blow it up under warranty.....no luck yet. haha It does **** me off though. I need a supercharger so I cant hear it. lol

I work at a GM dealership (job security cause they are F'in junk) and some of the Chevy's had recalls about their direct port motors....they made some foam cover to surround the pump to quiet it down some...maybe we should figure something like that out.

It is the vct / phasers making the noise.

I unplugged the vct's and the sound went away just as ford says it will if it is the problem.

The funny thing is after i did that it seemed to not be as bad for a while but seems to be back again.

I have had my '09 5.4 XLT 4X4-SB for a full three years now, with 42,000 + miles on the odometer.

No problems and no unusual sounds coming from the engine compartment.

Truck runs so nice, motor and trans!!

Hank, who works down at the corner gas station, told me it's probably because of the Royal Purple; which we all know, is the best!!

It was a facetious--tongue in cheek--comment.

We used to have oil wars here, awhile back, on which was the best oil, with many fanatics for the Royal Purple brand.
